Mavericks executive departing organization after Jason Kidd dismissal
The Dallas Mavericks grabbed attention on Tuesday after announcing that they have mutually parted ways with Jason Kidd after five seasons as coach. Kidd still had four years and over $40 million left on his contract.
The decision came just a few weeks after the Mavericks hired Masai Ujiri as president of basketball operations.
Kidd, who steered Dallas to the NBA Finals in 2024, signed an extension in October.
Following the departure of the 53-year-old Kidd, NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that another official is set to leave the Mavericks.
“I’m told Mavericks executive Matt Riccardi is also departing the organization. Riccardi, who served as Dallas’ co-general manager this season in the wake of Nico Harrison’s exit, was the runner-up to Masai Ujiri in Patrick Dumont’s process to find a new president of basketball operations,” wrote Fischer on X.
NBA insider Marc Stein noted that Riccardi was mainly responsible for the trade that sent Anthony Davis, along with D’Angelo Russell, Jaden Hardy, and Dante Exum, to the Washington Wizards in February. In exchange, the Mavericks received Khris Middleton, Marvin Bagley III, AJ Johnson, and five draft picks.
According to a report from ESPN’s Tim McMahon, Dumont gave Ujiri “full authority” in recalibrating the Mavericks. The team missed the playoffs for the second straight season after a 26-56 record, its worst finish since the 2017-2018 campaign.
McMahon noted that Kidd wanted to be promoted to president of basketball operations after Harrison was fired in November, but Dumont did not consider the Hall of Famer for the front office.
Kidd tallied a 205-205 record in Dallas, which he helped win the title as a player in 2011.
