Mark Hughes loses job after promotion failure as ex-Premier League player lined up to replace him
Carlisle United have today confirmed the departure of Mark Hughes as head coach.
The Welshman took over at Brunton Park in February 2025, but failed to keep the Cumbrians in League Two last season as they finished 23rd, seven points off safety.

Hughes remained in charge for the 2025-26 campaign, but was unable to guide Carlisle to promotion.
The National League club finished third and lost to Boreham Wood in the semi-finals of the play-offs.
“Carlisle United can confirm that Mark Hughes has left his position as Head Coach by mutual agreement,” a statement read on the club’s official website.
“The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Mark for his professionalism, commitment and leadership during his time at Brunton Park.
“Last season marked significant progress, with the side finishing third in the Enterprise National League with 95 points, and reaching the play-offs.
“While everyone connected with the club was disappointed not to achieve promotion, Mark played an important role in stabilising the team and helping to move the club forward.”
According to reports, ex-Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot is now expected to take over as head coach after the 40-year-old left his role at Gateshead earlier this week.
