Marcelo Mayer could make Giants debut vs. Red Sox in Boston, but there’s a big catch
The Boston Red Sox surprisingly traded infielder Marcelo Mayer to the San Francisco Giants before the 2026 MLB trade deadline. The Red Sox’s move was not expected, but Mayer is preparing for his next chapter nonetheless. The infielder has not yet made his debut with the Giants due to an injury. Mayer’s injury is listed as a “bone stress reaction, left ulna” on MLB.com. According to MLB.com, Mayer could possibly make his Giants debut during the team’s upcoming series against the Red Sox in Boston, but that is unlikely to happen.
“Began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento on Aug. 13. Could join the Giants for their upcoming series at Boston, but the more likely scenario is that he’ll be activated when the club returns home next week.”
The door is open for Mayer to join the Giants and get his revenge against the Red Sox. However, MLB.com is reporting that it is more likely Mayer won’t be activated from the injured list until next week.
The Giants are currently in Cleveland for a three-game series against the Guardians. They will begin their three-game series at Fenway Park against the Red Sox on Friday.
One has to imagine that Mayer would love to make his Giants debut at his former team’s ball park, but San Francisco is going to proceed with caution. The team obviously does not want to rush him back from injury.
Updates on Marcelo Mayer’s injury status will continue to be monitored and provided as they are made available.
