Magic rumors: How Jamahl Mosley’s hot seat might ‘erupt in flames’
Orlando Magic coach Jamahl Mosley has become one of the more talked-about coaches in recent weeks. But for the wrong reasons.
Experts believe that Mosley is in the hot seat after the Magic stumbled to a 45-37 record in his fifth year at the helm. While they made the Play-In Tournament as the eighth seed, not many are picking them to have a deep run in the playoffs.
The Magic will face the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday. If there is one thing going for Orlando, it is that Joel Embiid will miss the game as he is still recovering from his appendectomy.
For The Ringer’s Zach Lowe, the game against the 76ers is a make-or-break situation for the 47-year-old Mosley.
“They should still be able to beat Philly with no Embiid on the road. If they can’t and their season ends, then Jamahl Mosley’s seat, it’s been hot all year, erupts in flames, I think,” said Lowe.

For Lowe’s co-host, Bill Simmons, everything came to a head for Mosley and the Magic in their season finale against the Boston Celtics on Sunday. The Magic lost, 113-108, despite having a complete lineup against the Celtics’ bench players.
Boston played without Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, Payton Pritchard, Neemias Queta, Nikola Vucevic, and Sam Hauser.
“This is a borderline catastrophic Orlando loss. They actually went backwards in the standings. They now have to play a play-in game on the road. Inexplicable. This whole thing about just not taking game No. 82 seriously enough because the other team’s going to rest some guys. The league’s too good now,” said Simmons.
Mosley, who signed a four-year contract extension in 2024, is looking to steer the Magic to a third straight appearance in the playoffs. They were eliminated in the first round in back-to-back seasons.
