LSU football’s Lane Kiffin is getting praised by coaches’ wives over project

The Lane Train has officially pulled into Baton Rouge, and Lane Kiffin isn’t just overhauling the LSU football roster, he’s overhauling the coaching staff’s waistlines. As the Tigers wrap up the final week of 2026 spring practice, the headlines aren’t just about the nation’s top-ranked transfer portal class. Instead, it’s Kiffin’s role as a fitness guru that has the Bayou buzzing.

In a recent press conference, the Louisiana State University head coach revealed a unique “project” involving his coaching staff. Kiffin has committed to getting his assistants in better shape, a move that has apparently made him a hero at home for his staff.

“I’ve actually had a number of wives over the years thank me,” Kiffin joked. “My new project is Tee Martin. We’re on about week 3.”

Martin, the legendary Tennessee Volunteers quarterback turned high-level assistant, is the latest to undergo the Kiffin-led transformation. This culture shift follows a disappointing 2025 campaign under Brian Kelly that saw the Tigers finish a mediocre 7-6. The era ended on a sour note with a 38-35 loss to the Houston Cougars in the Texas Bowl, a game where the LSU defense surrendered 507 total yards.

Kiffin is clearly betting that a more disciplined, high-energy staff will translate to a more disciplined product on the field. During the Texas Bowl defeat, the Tigers struggled with consistency, despite a late-season effort that saw quarterback Garrett Nussmeier finish his injury-hampered 2025 season with 1,927 passing yards and 12 touchdowns.

As the Tigers head toward their final spring session on April 24, the atmosphere in the building is night and day compared to last winter. With Kiffin at the helm, LSU looks to reclaim its spot atop the SEC. If the “Tee Martin Project” is any indication, the Tigers are shedding the dead weight of the past, literally and figuratively.
