Lionel Messi’s goal vs. Jordan makes FIFA history

Lionel Messi is rewriting the record books at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and he added another line to the list against Jordan. With his goal in Argentina’s 3-1 win on Sunday, Messi became the first player in World Cup history to score in seven consecutive matches at the tournament.

No player had ever reached that mark before. The run puts Messi in a class of his own. He had been level with France’s Just Fontaine and Brazil’s Jairzinho, who each scored in six straight World Cup games in 1958 and 1970, respectively. Messi’s goal against Jordan moved him past both.

The streak began in the Round of 16 match-up against Australia at the 2022 World Cup, where Messi carried Argentina to the title. He then found the net in each of Argentina’s final four matches in Qatar, then opened the 2026 tournament with goals against Algeria and Austria.

The latest entry came in familiar fashion. Messi started the Jordan match on the bench, came on around the hour mark, and curled home a free kick to push the run to seven.

The goal also tightened his grip on the Golden Boot race. Messi now leads all scorers with six goals at this World Cup, ahead of a chasing pack that includes Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Erling Haaland, and Vinicius Junior. He opened the tournament with a hat trick against Algeria and added two more in the win over Austria.

Messi already stands as the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 19 goals, a tally that passed both Miroslav Klose and Marta earlier in the tournament. At 39 and competing in a record-equaling sixth World Cup alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi keeps finding new ways to stand alone.

Argentina finished top of Group J with a perfect record and now turns to the knockout rounds, where La Albiceleste will face Cape Verde in the Round of 32. The Golden Boot that has eluded Messi across his career is suddenly within reach, and the milestones keep coming.
