Knicks’ Jalen Brunson claims he’s not a star in surprising admission
The New York Knicks are currently resting up for the Eastern Conference Finals, having swept the Philadelphia 76ers in the last round. The Knicks have been on an absolute heater, winning seven straight playoff games, with six of them coming by double-digits, including several monster blowouts.
Jalen Brunson has been humming right along as the engine of the Knicks’ offense during the streak, not necessarily putting up many Herculean stat lines but still making his presence felt on a nightly basis.
However, recently, the point guard was asked about his approach, being the star player on the team, and he had a surprising reaction to the framing of the question.
“One, I’m not a star. Two, I want to win,” said Brunson, per Knicks Videos on X, formerly Twitter.
Most NBA fans and pundits would disagree with Brunson’s statement, but it’s certainly a humble way of looking at things for a player who has been widely credited with spearheading New York’s current era of basketball success.
It’s true that, at least during this playoff run, Brunson hasn’t always been putting up the biggest numbers. In the first round against the Atlanta Hawks, OG Anunoby was arguably the Knicks’ best player, shooting a scorching percentage from three to go along with his elite defense. Anunoby continued that play into the next round, but ended up missing the last two games of the Philadelphia series with a hamstring injury.
Meanwhile, Karl-Anthony Towns has also been elite in this postseason run, serving more as a playmaker than just a pure scorer, and putting up some impressive assist numbers as a result.
Still, when the Knicks need a bucket, Brunson is typically who they go to, and he’ll likely produce at least one iconic moment as their playoff run continues.
