The King George has produced some titanic battles down the years and we look like we’re in for another mesmerising clash this time around! Calandagan is looking to defend his crown with the trainer eyeing up a hat-trick in the race.

A really good supporting card with the Group 3 Princess Margaret Japan Cup Stakes for the fillies and the Group 3 Valiant Stakes as well. Throw in some fiercely competitive handicaps and we have a decent punting card. Let’s go to war with the bookies on Super Saturday!

1.10 Dentakay EBF Crocker Bulteel ‘Confined’ Maiden Stakes (Class 2) 6f

Never Enough is the obvious one here having gone close on debut at Windsor. That form has taken a few knocks already though with the third Desert Legend well held at Newbury and the fourth Absolute Diamond finishing nearer last than first as Kempton.

I’ve decided to chance PERFECT STRIKE on debut for William Haggas. This colt was a €280,000 breeze-up purchase and it would be no surprise to see him go close first time out.

Tumishi was green on debut at Nottingham and has been given time since so could improve and be the danger. Again though his form could have worked out better. Izuba is another eye-catching debutant so keep an eye on the betting.

1.45 Princess Margaret Japan Cup Stakes (Fillies’ Group 3) (Class 1) 6f

I was with ALTA REGINA in the Queen Mary and I thought she ran a very good race to finish sixth. She just looked a bit outpaced so this step up to 6f should be a big positive here. Her debut win has been given a boost and she is clearly a nice prospect in the making so I’m keen to keep her on side with Jamie Spencer back on.

Dark Issue is a good looker and she impressed winning on debut at Goodwood before finishing fourth behind Libertango in the Albany. She can do better and looks the danger. Moonrise bolted up on debut and ran huge in the Windsor Castle so is another one I can see going particularly well here.

2.20 Longines Valiant Stakes (Fillies’ And Mares’ Group 3) (Round) (Class 1) 1m

I thought TOULEEN was unlucky at Royal Ascot. She was given a lot to do and just couldn’t get a gap at a crucial stage. Once she did see daylight she flew home but the winner Precise had already got first run. She has still only had six starts so there is likely a lot more to come yet and down in grade here she is the one they all have to beat.

Kon Tiki is tough and likeable and ran well behind Blue Bolt at Royal Ascot. She won’t go down without a fight but probably just lacks the class of the selection and that should be the deciding factor.

Of the rest, Skydance impressed beating Thundering On in Ireland and is also worthy of some respect.

2.55 Moet & Chandon International Handicap (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) 7f

The way EXTREMELY ZAIN put it to bed to remain unbeaten at York last month was mightily impressive. He is quite clearly a Group horse in a handicap here and I can see him making it a perfect 4/4 under Tom Marquand. This track should bring out further improvement if anything as I think he’ll get further in time.

Amazing Journey is really finding his stride now having won two of his last three and back up to 7f could kick on again so looks the danger – I’ll probably have an each way saver at the prices. Great Acclaim is another one I can see running better than his price suggests.

3.35 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Group 1) (Class 1) 1m4f

It’s the big one now the King George! I still think CALANDAGAN is as talented as we saw 12 months ago so I’m confident he can defend his crown. He has won six Group 1s now and went last to first to win this last year.

He beat Masquerade Ball to win the Japan Cup and showed he still possesses that potent turn of foot flying late to get up in France when last seen.

The ground is perfect and with a lot of pace on from Lambourn and co it should set up perfectly again. Irish Derby hero Benvenuto Cellini takes his chance but 3yo’s have a poor record in the race with Enable the last one to win back in 2020.

He has been a big drifter over the last week or so and the stable do seem to be struggling for form which is a bit concerning as well. Masquerade Ball could be the one to finish closest as the betting is very much suggesting.

Bet on CALANDAGAN to win at 42/25 with SBK

4.10 Ascot Shop Handicap (Class 4) 1m4f

This is arguably the most competitive race on the card so just a tentative vote goes to EDWIN HUBBLE. He was sent off 18/1 on reappearance and shaped like he would do better for the run.

He did just that to go down less than a length at Windsor and if building on that again could get seriously competitive in here with this track likely to suit too.

Taritino is on a hat-trick and impressed at Chester but this is obviously a much different task. If he transfers that form to this track he could go well again so don’t underestimate. Masterinthewoods is still just a 4yo and arrives bang in form so is another one to note.

Bet on EDWIN HUBBLE each way at 13/2 with Sky Bet

4.45 Betfred Handicap (Straight) (Class 2) 1m

Another race where it could pay to look away from the top of the market and SPOKEN TRUTH makes appeal at 14/1. He met trouble at a crucial time when down the field at Sandown and could run much better here.

His third to Sallaal at Epsom was a good run as was that second to Bella’s Path at Nottingham. He is well handicapped and this straight mile should suit as we know he stays further.

Frankies Dream is also capable at a price albeit he is far from straightforward. The drop back in trip could help him as well. Spanish Voice showed a good attitude to win on penultimate start and then wasn’t disgraced at Newmarket last time so is another player in here at an each way price.

5.20 Whispering Angel Handicap (Class 2) 5f

Hopefully we’ll be able to treat ourselves to a glass of Whispering Angel before the lucky last if things have gone to plan! BOLO NEIGHS should have a great chance in the finale.

He is well suited by this track and if he handles the drop back to the minimum trip could go close at a nice price. He won over 6f here back in May and was good value for that victory so could still have a big run in him off this mark.

Pilgrim looked good winning at Musselburgh and has held his form well since so freshened up could be capable of a big performance as he is 1-1 over track and trip as well. Rocking Ends was back to winning ways at Newmarket and you wouldn’t rule out another big run here either off the back of that.

My top tip for King George Raceday on Saturday

I always love King George day at Ascot and hopefully we can land a big double!

TOULEEN probably should have won at Royal Ascot and can make amends here and I’m sticking with CALANDAGAN to defend his crown in the big one and land a hat-trick in the race for the trainer.
