Kevin Stefanski’s blunt challenge to Falcons’ James Pearce Jr. amid legal issues
The Atlanta Falcons are taking part in minicamp this week as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 NFL season. In attendance for the practice sessions is rising second-year player James Pearce Jr., who has been involved in an ongoing legal saga this offseason following his February arrest in South Florida.
Recently, Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski, who was hired to replace Raheem Morris, issued a blunt challenge to Pearce ahead of his second season in the NFL.
“He knows what’s expected of him,” said Stefanski, per Will McFadden of the Falcons on X, formerly Twitter.
Stefanski also spoke on what the Falcons’ plan is for Pearce at practice this week, saying the star “is not going to do team period type stuff yet with him not being here for the offseason program, but he’ll be out there,” per Josh Kendall of The Athletic on X.
Pearce Jr. had an outstanding rookie season for the Falcons after they traded back into the first round to select him out of Tennessee, along with fellow rookie Jalon Walker out of Georgia. Pearce led the team in sacks and was a large part of the Falcons having a decent pass rush for the first time in well over a decade this past season.
However, all of that threatened to come to a screeching halt when he was arrested in February for charges stemming from an incident with his girlfriend, WNBA star Rickea Jackson, and an ensuing confrontation with police. In the months since then, Pearce Jr. has agreed to a pre-trial diversion program that would see all charges eventually dropped, although there is still speculation that a lengthy suspension from the NFL could be on the table.
The Falcons are set to kick off their 2026 season on September 13 vs the Pittsburgh Steelers.
