Kerala government approves new international cricket stadium in Kochi

The Kerala government on August 8, 2026, granted official permission for an international-standard cricket stadium to be built in Kochi, marking a significant step forward for cricket infrastructure in the state. The Agriculture Department cleared 10.13 hectares of land in Chengamanad village, Aluva taluk, situated close to Cochin International Airport, for the purpose.

The clearance was issued under Section 10(2) of the Kerala Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland Act, 2008. Authorities classified the stadium as a public purpose project, invoking the Kerala Sports Policy 2023, the Kerala Sports Act 2025 and the Kerala Sports Infrastructure Development Scheme 2025. The order also carries strict conditions relating to environmental protection and water conservation that must be met before and during construction.

Who drove the Kochi stadium project forward?

The Kerala Cricket Association had placed the Kochi Sports City proposal before the state government on January 23, 2024. Beyond cricket, the project is designed to accommodate facilities for other sports, giving it a broader scope than a dedicated cricket venue alone.

Jayesh George, who served as KCA president when the Kochi Sports City proposal was submitted in January 2024 and now chairs the Women's Premier League, was instrumental in obtaining BCCI backing for the project. ICC chairman Jay Shah visited the proposed site during an IPL auction trip to Kerala and is reported to have issued directions concerning the development, though the specifics of those directions have not been independently confirmed.

KCA president Sreejith V Nair welcomed the government decision, calling it a landmark development for cricket in Kerala. KCA secretary Vinod S Kumar said the association would ensure that all construction activity complies with the environmental conditions set out in the government order.

“The proposed stadium will provide world-class facilities for cricketers and fans. Hosting national and international matches will give a major boost to sports tourism and the state’s economy,” Nair was quoted as saying by Onmanorama.

BCCI officials and members of the board's infrastructure committee are expected to inspect the Chengamanad site in the near future, though no specific date has been announced. That visit will be a critical step in moving the project from government approval into detailed planning and eventual construction.

The site's proximity to Cochin International Airport in Aluva taluk is regarded as a strong logistical advantage for hosting international fixtures, given the ease of travel for visiting teams and supporters.
