Ken Rosenthal drops Mets’ Bo Bichette ‘free agent’ take amid dreadful season

While fans have been witnessing an awful stretch from Mets star Bo Bichette in his first year with the team, they’re wondering when the former Toronto Blue Jay is going to turn it around. After the Mets signed Bichette to a $126 million contract in the offseason, this MLB insider goes into how his contract situation could look next offseason and how that could be impacting him now.

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal was speaking on “Foul Territory,” where he was talking about Bichette’s struggles, as he’s batting a .210 average to go along with two home runs and 18 RBIs in 46 games. Looking at how Bichette could leave New York after one season with the struggles, Rosenthal expressed how that could be in his head “a little bit.”

“He has the opt-outs in the contract after year one and year two, so effectively he can leave the Mets after one season, reenter the free agent market at age 29, and in a weak free agent market maybe hit it even bigger than he did this past offseason,” Rosenthal said. “Well, I would bet that’s in Bo Bichette’s head a little bit too. How can it not be?”

“He is effectively in his free agent year again, and while yes, no one’s going to feel sorry for him, because he’ll get a $5 million buyout on top of his $42 million salary, a total of $47 million if he leaves the Mets after one year,” Rosenthal continued. “No one’s going to have sympathy for this kind of quandary, but at the same time, might this be messing with his head? Yes, it might be messing with his head.”

Ken Rosenthal believes Mets’ Bo Bichette will turn it around

Rosenthal would continue talking about Bichette, even saying that he does expect the 28-year-old to turn his season around with the Mets and familiarize people with the player he can be.

Especially with New York continuing to deal with injuries to Francisco Lindor, Luis Robert Jr., and Jorge Polanco, the team needs Bichette, though Rosenthal would say it could be too late for the ball club as a whole.
