Jude Bellingham risked World Cup suspension in crazy Mexico celebrations following Harry Kane’s lead

Jude Bellingham has admitted he risked missing England’s World Cup quarter-final by jumping the hoardings to celebrate their win over Mexico.

Bellingham was the star of the show as the ten-man Three Lions held on for a heroic 3-2 victory at the Azteca Stadium, scoring twice in one of the great tournament performances.

The 23-year-old netted the opening two goals in Mexico City to get Thomas Tuchel‘s side up and running.

But England soon found themselves in a real battle as Julian Quinones pulled a goal back for Mexico, before Jarell Quansah was shown a red card early on in the second half.

Harry Kane‘s 60th-minute penalty proved to be the winner, as the Three Lions defended for their lives to see out the win despite Raul Jimenez pulling one back with a penalty of his own.

Bellingham stole the plaudits with a masterclass against Mexico – receiving a perfect 10 in Adrian Durham’s player ratings for his vital contributions, also putting in a stunning last-ditch tackle just before half-time to deny Mexico an equaliser.

Risky business

After grinding out a famous win, England’s players celebrated in style, singing with the supporters in front of the stand behind the goal.

And while Bellingham lapped up the atmosphere, joining in a powerful rendition of ‘Wonderwall’, he later revealed he was left sweating over whether his actions would land him in hot water.

With the England hero heading into the game carrying a booking from their round of 32 win over DR Congo, another yellow card would have seen him suspended for their quarter-final clash with Norway.

And Bellingham has admitted this made him initially hesitant about following his teammates towards their fans at full time.

He told England’s social media team after the win: “I was going to [jump the fence], and then I thought: ‘Nah, maybe not’.

“I don’t know if you can get booked for that, and obviously I’m already on a booking and trying to save as much trouble this tournament.”

But Bellingham revealed that he decided to take matters into his own hands after seeing captain Kane make a move towards the stands.

He explained: “I saw Harry go and then I was like, ‘If the King’s going to do it, then I’m going after – he ain’t going to get in trouble’.

“So yeah, an unbelievable moment. Those kind of images live with you for years, so I’m very grateful to be part of it.”

While Bellingham’s risk appears to have paid off, with the midfielder escaping a booking for his post-match celebrations, not all of his England teammates enjoyed as smooth a ride.

Jordan Henderson suffered a freak injury amid the scenes, as he fell over the hoardings and landed on his wrist, exiting the pitch on a stretcher with oxygen before going straight to hospital.

The veteran midfielder has now reportedly been ruled out of the rest of the World Cup, having been left requiring surgery.

As for Bellingham, he now needs just to avoid a booking in England’s quarter-final clash with Norway to be able to play in a possible semi-final clash, with players receiving an automatic reset on their yellow card tally after the last eight.

All timer

England’s players have been hailed as heroes for their monumental display in Mexico City, with the result being labelled one of the national team’s best ever in tournament football.

And Bellingham agreed that the occasion as a whole had immediately gone right to the top of his favourite moments in a Three Lions shirt.

He said: “It’s probably right at the top.

“Pleasure to be a part of this kind of night. The whole team, so proud of everyone.

“It’s an unbelievable achievement.”
