Jose Mourinho tipped for Premier League job this summer as pressure mounts on under-fire boss

Newcastle have been urged to bring in Jose Mourinho to take the club to the next level.

Current boss Eddie Howe is coming under increasing pressure from a frustrated fan base amid an underwhelming season.

The Magpies have failed to build on their Carabao Cup win in 2024/25, where they also finished fifth to qualify for the Champions League.

This season they are a lowly 12th, having dropped below rivals Sunderland after a 2-1 derby defeat at St James’ Park on Sunday.

A 7-2 thrashing at Barcelona has made it the week from hell for Newcastle fans with Howe in the firing line for fans’ ire.

talkSPORT understands the Newcastle hierarchy are continuing to back Howe, but face the prospect of no European football next season.

Eddie Howe replacements

talkSPORT’s Inside the Toon YouTube show discussed who could come in to replace Howe, who has been at Newcastle since November 2021.

Head of sport at The Sun, Shaun Custis, said: “I would take Mourinho.

“We talk about putting ourselves on a global level, about being in the conversation with all the big clubs around the world, and if you have a manager like Mourinho, he can attract players.

“He’s also recognised around the world. It puts Newcastle on a different level.

“People now are interested in Benfica results. You weren’t taking a blind bit of notice about Benfica results before.

“He has that charisma. He has won trophies. He is a winning manager. Box office boss.”

Former Chelsea, Man United and Tottenham boss Mourinho has strong connection to the north east club through his relationship with Sir Bobby Robson.

Robson mentored a young Mourinho at Sporting, Porto and Barcelona. Initially as his translator before transitioning into a coaching role.

talkSPORT.com’s Jack Cunningham added: “Mourinho’s got that connection in Newcastle. The fans would get behind him.

“I just don’t think he’s at the level anymore that he was. I think that if you are getting a new manager, it has to be with a new squad anyway.

“At the moment, I think actually with this squad, how is he going to get the most out of it? I don’t think if you kept the squad the same, another manager would come in and get much more out of the squad.

“The squad is the issue more so for me. But in terms of a new manager, I think [Como manager Cesc] Fabregas would be an exciting appointment.

“Sebastian Hoeness from Stuttgart got the best out of [Nick] Woltemade and is extremely highly rated as well.”

Next up for Newcastle after the international break is a trip to Crystal Palace, who are just three points behind the Magpies.

Then Howe’s former club Bournemouth are visiting St James’ Park.
