Jets rumors: What it will take for Winnipeg to trade 8th overall pick in NHL Draft
The Winnipeg Jets fell off completely this season after winning the President’s Trophy in the previous season. They have the eighth overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Reportedly, there is one option that could convince the Jets to trade that pick, according to David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period.
“The Winnipeg Jets could make the eighth-overall pick available if it means landing a second-line centre or winger in their mid-20s to their team,” Pagnotta wrote.
With Jonathan Toews set to retire, there will be a void in that spot. Currently, Mark Scheifele is the top center while Adam Lowry occupies the second-line center spot. But the Jets believe they could use an upgrade and get younger. With Mason McTavish possibly on the trading block, he becomes an option. He would give the Jets an instant upgrade. While he struggled last season, he had 52 points in the 2024-25 season. That is significantly better than Lowry’s stats.
The Jets have plenty of trade targets this offseason. After enduring one of the biggest falls in modern history, the team looks to bounce back. The offense struggled mightily, ranking 25th in goals and 23rd on the power play. While they were fourth in shooting percentage, they were also among the bottom five in shots per game. Getting a top center who can set up or put pucks on the net would be ideal.
McTavish and Robert Thomas both serve as ideal targets, especially considering the Jets’ needs. If the team trades that first-round pick, it will have to be for a player who can help support the top liners and lead the second line.
