Jazz ‘s Darryn Peterson dispels predraft narrative with ‘NSFW’ Summer League admission

LAS VEGAS — On his way to becoming the No. 2 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, a narrative followed Darryn Peterson that Evan Mobley and Anthony Edwards know well. The point guard missed 11 games at Kansas because of cramps, which left fans and pundits questioning both his will to win and love for basketball.

Even former All-Stars looked down on Peterson’s collegiate tenure, with DeMarcus Cousins going as far as to joke that one “would’ve thought he wasn’t on the draft board” amid his absences. The 19-year-old point guard revealed that blood testing shortly after the season showed creatine supplements caused his episodic cramps. In September, one such episode after a Bill Self training camp left Peterson in fear for his life.

Now, Peterson is leading the Utah Jazz’s Summer League efforts — and he’s glad to be doing so. Asked by ClutchPoints how he was feeling, the point guard made clear that he was excited to be back at work.

“Great. Definitely a little more rough,” he said of the level of physicality. “But uh, s—. I was living, I’m good! I say it all the time, I haven’t played since March. So, just to be hooping, I’m having fun.”

Peterson’s positive attitude came in the face of Utah’s second Summer League loss, a 104-82 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Clippers. Their lack of offensive production wasn’t on the #2 overall pick, though.

Peterson tallied 23 points, two rebounds, five assists, two steals, and two blocks in just 26 minutes of action. He made just six of his 18 shot attempts. But he converted on six of eight free throw attempts, adding 10 total points to his stat line.

The incoming rookie also provided more insight with regard to how the level of physicality felt, citing the expected increase in intensity as a focus of his predraft preparation. Peterson said Olin Simplis, known as “The Guard Whisperer,” emphasized it throughout the process.

“Super big. I honed in on it in predraft. I was with Olin, The Guard Whisperer, so we trained with that a lot. Definitely want to come in and try to use it. I’m still adjusting to it as well, so I’m taking Summer League as an opportunity to practice stuff that I’ve worked on,” Peterson explained.

Summer League is Summer League for a reason. The medium is the message, and the results of these games don’t define any player or team’s upcoming season. Peterson and the Jazz are counting on it. Early returns have been relatively strong from their new franchise point guard, but there’s still room to grow. In an ever-changing NBA, there likely always will be.
