Jared McCain shares key to quickly fitting in with Thunder after 76ers trade
The Oklahoma City Thunder’s success this postseason can be largely attributed their their ridiculously deep bench. In a league where 7 or 8 people usually play big minutes in the postseason, OKC often has 10 or 11 players playing meaningful minutes in the postseason. One of these bench stars is a recent pickup this season: Jared McCain, who was traded by the Philadelphia 76ers during the trade deadline.
McCain has fit in remarkably well with the Thunder, his shotmaking and fearlessness adding a new dimension to their bench. After exploding for 24 points in Game 3, the guard was asked about how he easily fit with his new team. McCain said that OKC’s supportive environment helped him adjust to his new teammates and system.
“Man, it’s the team (Thunder). It’s the staff,” McCain said in his post-game interview with SportsCenter. “Like, they do a great job of just showing love and being able to give me confidence to go out there and be myself. When I first got here, I was nervous. I didn’t know what to expect, and they just welcomed me. And that’s been the greatest thing for me throughout this whole process. No matter what, if the shot’s not falling, they’re still confident in me.”
The Thunder traded for McCain for one simple reason: for him to get buckets. The guard was an electric scorer for the 76ers last season before he suffered a season-ending meniscus tear. The Thunder have no shortage of guards who are great at perimeter defense and spot-up shooting, but they needed someone who could create for himself
Thus far, McCain has provided that spark for the Thunder when they needed it the most. In Game 3, the guard popped off for 24 points, challenging the Spurs defense. At one point, McCain even went at Victor Wembanyama, succeeding multiple time in scoring against the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.
After the drama of his trade, McCan is finally showing his worth to the NBA world. He’ll look to continue his hot streak in Game 4 of the postseaosn.
