Japan vs Sweden predictions and betting tips – Samurai Blue to punish a chasing Sweden
This is a Group F decider with a clear split in what each side needs, and that is the key to the whole game.
Japan need only a draw to seal a top-two finish, while Sweden have to win to be sure of going through. I have been through both teams’ first two games and the numbers, and I am backing the in-form Samurai Blue to take advantage.
Japan have been one of the standout sides of the group stage, drawing with the Netherlands before tearing Tunisia apart 4-0, and they arrive on a nine-game unbeaten run that includes friendly wins over Brazil and England.
Sweden, by contrast, have blown hot and cold, thumping Tunisia 5-1 before being hammered by the same scoreline against the Netherlands. With Graham Potter’s side forced to throw men forward, I expect Japan to control the game and punish them on the counter.
My three favourite bets for this one:
- Japan to win – 10/11 with bet365
- Japan to score 2 or more goals – 4/5 with Coral
- 2 or more Sweden cards – 5/6 with Coral

Japan vs Sweden predicted lineups
Japan are without captain Wataru Endo and creator Takefusa Kubo, both injured, but their depth has barely shown it and Hajime Moriyasu is likely to stick with the 3-4-2-1 that has served them so well.
Sweden have no major absentees, with Potter weighing up whether to start Anthony Elanga after he impressed and scored off the bench against the Netherlands, and certain to pair Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak in a side that has to chase the game.
- Japan expected lineup: Z Suzuki; Tomiyasu, Itakura, H Ito; Doan, Sano, Tanaka, Nakamura; J Ito, Kamada; Ueda.
- Sweden expected lineup: Olsen; Krafth, Lindelof, Hien, Augustinsson; Elanga, Bergvall, Olsson, Larsson; Gyokeres, Isak.
Japan vs Sweden predictions
Japan have looked the more organised side throughout this tournament. A 2-2 draw with the Netherlands showed they can live with the best, and the 4-0 demolition of Tunisia, in which they became the first Asian nation to score four in a single World Cup game, underlined their attacking quality.
Ayase Ueda has a brace already, Daichi Kamada has two goals of his own, and crucially they only need a point, which lets them play with freedom and sit in to spring the counter.
Sweden are the more unpredictable proposition. Their attack, led by Gyokeres and Isak, can hurt anybody, but the 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands laid bare a defence which can only be described as shaky at best and now they have to commit numbers forward in search of the win they need. That plays straight into Japan’s hands.
I expect the Samurai Blue to soak up pressure, score on the break and frustrate a Sweden side that grows ragged as the clock ticks. I am going for a 2-1 Japan win.
Japan vs Sweden betting tips
I have gone for three angles built around Japan controlling the game while Sweden chase it, and all three are odds-on, so they roll together nicely into a bet builder at around 4/1, just bear in mind the bookies will trim that slightly for the link between Japan winning and scoring twice. Have a read through my picks below.
Samurai Blue to march into the last 32
Japan are the form team, the better-organised team and the one that can play on its own terms knowing a draw is enough. Sweden have to come out and attack, and that suits a side that has just beaten England and Brazil by picking them off on the break.
I am happy backing Japan to get the job done.
Bet on Japan to win at 10/11 with bet365
Japan to keep the goals flowing
Japan have scored two or more in both group games, hitting the Netherlands for two and Tunisia for four, and they have now found the net in nine straight matches.
Up against a Sweden defence that shipped five against the Dutch and must push men forward, I fancy the Samurai Blue to rack up a couple more.
Bet on Japan to score 2 or more goals at 4/5 with Coral
Sweden to feel the heat from the referee
Chasing a must-win game tends to mean late challenges and mounting frustration, and Sweden will be stretched as Japan break on them.
Referee Ivan Barton is a strict official who averages close to five yellow cards a game, so with the Swedes forced to foul to stop counters, I expect them to collect their share of bookings.
Bet on 2 or more Sweden cards at 5/6 with Coral

Important historical facts about Japan and Sweden for betting
- Japan’s 4-0 win over Tunisia made them the first Asian side to score four goals in a single World Cup match, and Daichi Kamada’s opener that day was Japan’s earliest-ever World Cup goal, scored in the fourth minute.
- Japan are unbeaten in nine matches, a run that includes friendly wins over both Brazil and England.
- Sweden’s 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands was the first time they had conceded five in a World Cup game since the 1958 final. As in that final, they are managed by an Englishman, with Graham Potter now in the role George Raynor held back then.
- All of Sweden’s last eight matches have featured goals at both ends, underlining how open their games have become.
- Referee Ivan Barton is a strict CONCACAF official averaging close to five yellow cards a game, and away from the pitch he is a qualified organic chemistry professor.
- The nations have met only four times, all in friendlies between 1995 and 2002, with the most recent a 1-1 draw, so there is no competitive history to call on.
