Jannik Sinner smashes incredible Novak Djokovic record during stunning winning run

Jannik Sinner secured his spot in the semi-finals of the Italian Open on Thursday afternoon.

The Italian is looking to go the distance on home turf and win the ATP Masters 1000 tournament for the first time.

And Sinner booked his place in the final-four in Rome with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Russian Andrey Rublev.

In the process, Sinner smashed an incredible winning run that was held by iconic Serbian Tennis star Novak Djokovic back in 2011.

In beating Rublev, the world No.1 has now won a record-setting 32 consecutive Masters 1000 matches.

What’s more, Sinner has 27 consecutive wins under his belt since Indian Wells, dropping just two sets in the process.

Sinner, though, explained that breaking records are not the most important thing to him.

“I think I’m already writing my own story in any case. I feel like even if things don’t go well, I still did something great for myself,” Sinner explained.

“I would have never imagined standing here as the player I am right now.”

And having won the Monte-Carlo Masters, defeating Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner also looks a much-improved player on clay.

On the changes he’s made on clay in 2026, Sinner said in his post-match press conference: “No, I think we don’t need to look only at the results. I think also last year I played great clay court tennis.

“Made the final here. Made the final in Paris. It has been an incredible run last year.

“This year, the first time I’ve won something big on clay. But this is also the confidence of the process that we are trying to produce year after year.

“Also, physically, I’m getting stronger. I think it’s a mix of everything.

“That experience, to play certain points in a better way, yeah, but mostly I feel like physically if you improve, it helps you a lot on clay.”

Sinner will now face either Martin Landaluce or Daniil Medvedev in Friday’s second semi-final as the 24-year-old looks to go the distance in Rome.

One of Sinner, Landaluce or Medvedev will then take on either Luciano Darderi or Casper Ruud in Sunday’s final.

Victory for any player would provide the perfect foundation for the French Open, which gets underway later this month.

Sinner is favourite to win at Roland-Garros after world No.2 Alcaraz withdrew from the tournament due to a wrist injury sustained at the Barcelona Open.
