Jakub Dobes joins Canadiens legend in elite club after Game 7 win
The Montreal Canadiens won Game 7 over the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night. As a result, the Canadiens are off to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2014. And along the way, goaltender Jakub Dobes joined a franchise legend in a rather exclusive club.
“Rookie goaltenders in NHL history with multiple Game 7 wins on the road in one postseason: Ken Dryden (1971), Jakub Dobes (2026). End of list,” Sportsnet Stats noted on social media following Montreal’s huge Game 7 victory.
The Canadiens got the scoring started thanks to Phillip Danault, who scored his first of the postseason in the opening period. Montreal added another to extend their lead to 2-0. This stood until a Jordan Greenway goal made it 2-1 before the end of the second. Rasmus Dahlin tied the game for the Sabres in the third, before Alex Newhook won it for the Habs in overtime.
Dobes had a rather strong performance in this game, as well. He made 37 saves on 39 shots faced after a disastrous performance in Game 6 saw him pulled for Jacob Fowler.
“I actually felt really good this game,” said Dobes about his performance on Monday night, via NHL.com. “… I think me getting pulled at home was kind of a wake-up call. I took it personal. And we won today, so I’m really happy.”
The Canadiens will now take on the Carolina Hurricanes in the East Final. Montreal is seeking its first trip to the Stanley Cup Final since 1993, when it defeated Wayne Gretzky and the Los Angeles Kings. The Habs and Canes will begin the East Final on Thursday in Carolina.
