Insider provides update on Nneka Ogwumike’s Lynx free agency visit
An innocent post from a balloon company caused quite a stir on Wednesday morning when it looked like they had inadvertently revealed that WNBA free agent Nneka Ogwumike was on the verge of agreeing to terms with the Minnesota Lynx during the league’s amended free agency period.
The company, known as Amazing Balloons, posted a reel of a recent job they did involving the Lynx and with a huge ‘Welcome Nneka’ sign. But hold your horses, Nneka Ogwumike is reportedly not quite joining the Lynx via free agency, at least not just yet, as per Alexa Philippou of ESPN.
The since deleted post was apparently just part of a free agent pitch the Lynx had prepared for the former No. 1 overall pick, and they are just one of multiple teams that Ogwumike has scheduled meetings with amid the onset of the free agency negotiation period.
The negotiation period continues through April 10, and teams can beginning officially signing players on April 11. It’s part of an accelerated offseason schedule following the agreement and ratification of the new WNBA CBA.
The 10-time All-Star figures to be in high demand amid the free agency period. The majority of the league hit the free agent market as they intentionally did not sign contracts past last season in preparation for a new CBA bringing an increase in player salaries.
Ogwumike spent the last two seasons with the Seattle Storm, and she played in all 44 games last year at a little over 30 minutes per game. She averaged 18.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 steals with splits of 51.9 percent shooting from the field, 36.7 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 82.2 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
