Hurricanes’ Logan Stankoven caps epic 3-goal 1st period in Game 4 vs Canadiens

The Carolina Hurricanes entered Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final up 2-1 over the Montreal Canadiens. With the home crowd behind them, the Habs need the win to tie the series up. But the Hurricanes dominated the first period, capped by a Logan Stankoven goal that silenced the Bell Centre crowd.

The Hurricanes survived two early Canadiens powerplays to keep the game scoreless. Then, the penalty tides turned, and Carolina was unleashed. Sebastian Aho scored on the powerplay with 5:01 to play in the first. Captain Jordan Staal and Stankoven scored within three minutes to take the big lead.

Aho ripped home a one-timer on the Hurricanes’ second powerplay of the night. He led the team with 80 regular-season points, but he had not scored a goal since Game 5 of the first round. Getting the winger on the scoresheet is huge for the Canes moving forward. And then, K’Andre Miller hit Staal with a pass right in front of the net, which he buried.

The Canadiens blew out the Hurricanes in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final thanks to four first-period goals. Frederik Andersen was cold after a long layoff between series, and the Habs took advantage. Carolina has since won two overtime games, both 3-2, to take the series lead. Now, they are running away from Montreal, and they may be bringing the series with them.

The Hurricanes have made only one Stanley Cup Final appearance in franchise history, winning the 2006 Final over the Edmonton Oilers. The Canadiens have won 24 Stanley Cups and made 33 Cup Final appearances, both the most in league history. Their most recent title was in 1993, but they did make it in 2021.

Game 5 of the Canadiens-Hurricanes series is on Friday night in Raleigh. Will the home team have a chance to advance to the Stanley Cup Final? Or will the Habs pull off an epic comeback?
