Hurricanes’ Brandon Bussi nearly tears up after broadcast’s postgame surprise

The Carolina Hurricanes rode a stunning change to a massive Game 4 win over the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final on Tuesday night. After inserting Brandon Bussi into the lineup at goalie, the Canes put together a great third period to get a 5-3 win and even the series at two games each.

Bussi didn’t play quite as well as he did when he was inserted into the lineup in Game 3, but he still stopped 18 of 21 shots and did enough to allow the Hurricanes offense to take over and get the win in the third period.

After it was announced that Bussi would be getting the start over Frederik Andersen in Game 4, his family made the trip across the country to Las Vegas to watch his first playoff start. When he was shown their reactions afterward, he was on the verge of tears.

“That’s pretty special,” Bussi said, getting emotional. “They’re the reason why I’m able to do what I do right now. Their sacrifice means everything. They’re the best. … It means a lot. I can’t believe you guys just did that to me on TV!”

Bussi stopped 18 of 19 shots in Game 3, when he entered the game in relief of Andersen before the Hurricanes nearly came back from a 4-0 deficit to steal a victory. His solid performance over the last game-and-a-half has given Rod Brind’Amour a very difficult decision to make heading into Game 5.

Understandably, Brind’Amour didn’t want to make a final decision right after Game 4 when asked who would be in net back in Raleigh for Game 5 on Thursday night. Bussi has obviously made a strong case to be the starter moving forward in this series, while Andersen was 12-1 through three series to reach the Cup Final.

No matter who Brind’Amour decides to go with, his decision will have massive ramifications on this series. But it says enough that Bussi, who made his NHL debut this season and made his first playoff start on Wednesday night, has played well enough over the last two games to make it such a difficult decision.
