How Spurs’ 27-point destruction of Thunder made franchise history
The San Antonio Spurs kept their season alive in emphatic fashion Thursday night, defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder 118-91 in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals and setting a franchise playoff record in the process.
Facing elimination, San Antonio delivered its most dominant performance of the postseason to force a winner-take-all Game 7 against the defending NBA champions.
Shortly after the final buzzer, The Athletic’s Keerthika Uthayakumar highlighted the significance of the victory on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Spurs win by 27 points, the largest margin of victory in an elimination game in Spurs playoff history.”
The 27-point triumph marked the biggest postseason win ever recorded by San Antonio while facing elimination, surpassing every previous do-or-die victory in franchise history.
The Spurs controlled the game from the opening quarter and never allowed Oklahoma City to establish offensive rhythm. San Antonio built an early lead and continued to extend it throughout the second half as the Thunder struggled to generate consistent scoring opportunities.
The victory was particularly notable considering the circumstances. Oklahoma City entered the contest with a 3-2 series lead and an opportunity to clinch a second consecutive NBA Finals appearance. Instead, the Spurs responded with one of the most complete performances of their postseason run.
The result also contributed to a broader piece of NBA playoff history.
Uthayakumar later noted another significant milestone achieved during the 2026 postseason.
“There will be at least FIVE Game 7s this postseason, tied for the most in a single postseason in NBA playoff history.
It’s the most in one season since 2016.”
Spurs force historic Game 7 against Thunder behind Victor Wembanyama

The Thunder-Spurs series became the latest matchup to require a decisive seventh game, joining a postseason already filled with tightly contested series across both conferences.
San Antonio’s victory ensured that one of the NBA’s most anticipated conference finals matchups would go the distance. The Spurs have relied heavily on Victor Wembanyama and their talented young core throughout the postseason, while Oklahoma City has leaned on reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as it seeks to defend last season’s championship.
Despite the lopsided Game 6 result, the Thunder still have the advantage of hosting the decisive contest.
Game 7 is scheduled for Saturday at 5:30 p.m. PT on NBC and Peacock. The winner will advance to the NBA Finals to face the New York Knicks, who secured the Eastern Conference championship after sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers in four games earlier this week.
For San Antonio, Thursday’s historic victory guaranteed at least one more opportunity to continue a postseason run that has already produced several memorable moments.
