How Rams GM Les Snead called his own shot to Ty Simpson’s family
This NFL Draft has just been full of curveballs. The fireworks started early on when the New York Jets took David Bailey over Arvell Reese and continued when the Arizona Cardinals took Jeremiyah Love third overall. However, the Los Angeles Rams were the biggest shocker of the draft so far.
The Rams rarely pick in the first round, and they made sure to make a big splash. With the 13th overall pick, LA took Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. The consensus second-best quarterback behind first-overall pick Fernando Mendoza, Simpson went higher than most draft experts believed he would go.
Just before Simpson was drafted, insider Ian Rapoport shared a story that tied the Alabama quarterback to the Rams. As it turns out, Simpson’s family consulted with multiple experts about whether the quarterback should declare for the 2026 NFL Draft. Rams GM Les Snead was one of these consultants, and his prediction about the quarterback to the family proved to be fortituous.
“But listen to this: when the Simpson family is trying to make the decision about whether or not he should enter the draft or stay in school, they consult, among other people, Rams GM Les Snead, who told the family Simpson is for sure a first-rounder,” Rapoport said during the draft show. “Now, he actually has the opportunity to make it happen.”
Simpson is one of the more polarizing prospects in this year’s draft class. The Alabama quarterback has a good arm, solid processing, and possesses the most important trait for an NFL quarterback: anticipation. However, Simpson’s awkward mechanics lead to some troubling accuracy issues, even in short distances. The hope is that by sitting behind one of the best quarterbacks of his generation in Matthew Stafford, Simpson can unlearn some of his mechanical deficiencies.
