How Raiders’ Fernando Mendoza is already blowing minds, but not with his arm

The Las Vegas Raiders are generating a lot of excitement after selecting quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the first overall pick in the draft.

However, fans will have to wait to see him play in primetime.

Despite Mendoza impressing at training camp with his powerful throws, the recently released 2026 NFL schedule shows that the Raiders have no primetime games after a disappointing 3-14 season.

While some fans view this absence of Thursday, Sunday, or Monday night games as “disrespectful,” others see it as a chance for the team to rebuild away from the spotlight, which may ultimately benefit the rookie.

Mendoza’s physical abilities are evident, but it’s his sharp mental approach that is truly impressing the coaching staff.

According to reports, quarterbacks coach John Janocko mentioned that Mendoza’s keen curiosity is keeping everyone on their toes.

“He’s someone who wants to know the reasons behind everything, the story behind everything,” Janocko stated, describing Mendoza as a quick learner in the meeting rooms.

Having worked predominantly with experienced veterans in recent years, Janocko noted that Mendoza’s constant questions are prompting the staff to reassess their own methods.

“He’s asking questions that you might not have considered in years,” Janocko added.

“It also makes us evaluate everything… we could rethink our approach and potentially be even better.”

This high football IQ will be essential as Mendoza prepares for a likely learning year behind veteran free-agent signing Kirk Cousins.

Former NFL quarterback turned ESPN analyst Matt Hasselbeck predicts that the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and national champion will probably make his official NFL debut in Week 8 against the New York Jets.

This would give him a month of starting experience before the team’s late bye week.
