Hearts vs Motherwell predictions and betting tips – League leaders under pressure

Heart of Midlothian are looking over their shoulder in the Scottish Premiership title race. Rangers and Celtic are closing in on the league leaders, whose advantage in top spot has been cut to just one point.

Motherwell are their latest opponents this weekend. Will Hearts get back on track, or could this be the moment they drop down to second?

Hearts vs Motherwell predictions

If a Heart of Midlothian supporter had been told back in August that his team would be a point clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership with six rounds of fixtures remaining, he would have gladly settled for it.

Yet because Hearts’ lead at the summit of the standings has been chipped away at in recent weeks, a sense of anxiety has gripped the club’s fan base.

In a way, anything that Hearts achieve from here is something to be proud of. Despite being financially disadvantaged in comparison to the Old Firm, they are ahead of both Rangers and Celtic at this late stage.

Even if Hearts were to ultimately finish third, they would be able to look back on this campaign with pride having pushed the Glaswegian giants all the way.

And yet, Hearts fans would be gutted if their team fell short. For a long time it has looked as if Derek McInnes’ men would be the first non-Old Firm champions since Aberdeen claimed the prize under Alex Ferguson in 1984/85. Now they are starting to wobble.

Hearts have won only half of their last 10 matches in the Premiership. Three of those games have been defeats, each of them away from home.

Even when Hearts have emerged triumphant, they have not always been convincing. Each of their last four victories has been by a 1-0 scoreline, with a late winner required in two of those contests.

Last time out, Hearts could only manage a 2-2 draw with Livingston, the team propping up the Premiership table.

Elsewhere, Celtic beat Dundee and Rangers defeated Dundee United, leaving Hearts in a vulnerable position in top spot. They still lead the way on 67 points, but Rangers (66) and Celtic (64) are suddenly hot on their heels.

McInnes did not pull his punches after the match, claiming it was a case of two points dropped for his team and lamenting his side’s disappointing recent record on the road.

“I keep needing to remind myself that we go top of the league with six games to go. We’re still in a strong position and we’ve now got three games at home at the last six,” he said.

“But there’s no doubting that the next time we go away from home, we’re going to have to make sure we defend a lot better.”

Hearts vs Motherwell betting tips

Scottish Premiership title hopefuls Hearts host Motherwell in a massive match this weekend.

Motherwell awkward opponents

Were it not for Hearts’ remarkable exploits, Motherwell’s accomplishments this season would have reached a wider audience.

The Steelmen are fourth in the table as the Premiership prepares for its customary split, and Jens Berthel Askou’s side have arguably played the best football in the league in 2025/26.

It is true that Motherwell have gone off the boil of late, failing to win any of their last four games in the league.

But Hearts could get nervous if things do not go their way on Saturday, giving Motherwell the chance to take advantage. The visitors to Edinburgh can get something from this one.

Do not expect goals

The pattern of Hearts’ recent home games is clear.

Their last four matches in front of their own fans have all been 1-0 wins. That does not mean this one will be, but we are unlikely to suddenly see a goal-laden affair at Tynecastle Park.

Grinding out results is the name of the game for Hearts from this point on, so McInnes will not want to see his team take unnecessary risks this weekend.

Motherwell’s fixtures this season have featured an average of 2.4 goals, while Hearts’ have contained 2.56 every 90 minutes. That is enough evidence to support this wager.

Maswanhise the main man

Unfortunately for Motherwell, Tawanda Maswanhise is unlikely to be at the club this time next season.

The Zimbabwe international is enjoying a magnificent season after slowly finding his feet in Scotland last term.

Maswanhise has scored 22 goals in 38 games in all competitions. Seventeen of those strikes have come in the Premiership, putting him at the top of the scoring charts.

Maswanhise will be a thorn in the side of Hearts this weekend, and we like the odds on him finding the back of the net.
