Harry Kane ties historic England record in World Cup win vs. Croatia
The theme of the opening week of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been that the stars are out to shine here in North America. On Tuesday, it was Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland with two goals apiece before Lionel Messi one-upped them with a hat trick to cap off the night. On Wednesday, Harry Kane took the pitch to make a bit of World Cup history for himself.
Kane, who has been a goal-scoring machine all season in Europe, didn’t waste any time getting on the board on Wednesday against Croatia in a tricky opener for England. the star striker netted a penalty kick in the 12th minute to get on the board and added another goal with a beautiful header finish in the 42nd minute, giving England a 2-1 lead.
With that second goal, Kane moved into double figures with his 10th-career goal in World Cup competition, tying Gary Lineker for the most all-time by an Englishman, via StatsCentre.
With the pace that Kane has been on this season, he is sure to get on the board again during this World Cup and take the outright lead for himself. He scored 36 goals in 31 matches with Bayern Munich this season and has scored 81 goals in 115 career games for England in international competition.
After Croatia tied the game at two entering the half, England put its foot down to start the second half. Jude Bellingham gave England the lead in the 47th minute before Marcus Rashford sealed it with a beautiful finish late, giving England a 4-2 win.
Kane and England now sit at the top of Group L on goal differential, though Ghana has equaled them in points after beating Panama in the final minutes on Wednesday evening. England will get a chance to cement its position at the top of its group on Tuesday before finishing up group play against Panama on June 27. Even with two games to go, there’s no doubt that Kane and this squad have their sights set on the knockout stage and making a push for the trophy.
