Harry Kane ‘misunderstood’ as he chases more Bayern Munich history

Harry Kane’s pursuit for the Premier League top goalscoring record is a ‘misunderstanding’.

This is the view of talkSPORT’s Kevin Hatchard, who believes team awards mean more than individual glory to the England captain.

Bayern Munich and Kane made it back-to-back Bundesliga titles on Sunday with victory over Stuttgart on Sunday.

That means after not winning a senior trophy in his career until his second season at Bayern, Kane now has two Bundesliga titles to his name, and the Champions League is alive as well.

The German giants face Paris Saint-Germain in a mouth-watering encounter in the semi-finals, with the winners facing either Atletico Madrid or Arsenal.

He has been linked with a return back to the Premier League this summer to try and break Alan Shearer‘s all-time goalscoring record.

But Kane insists he’s happy in Bavaria, and talks over a new contract are underway.

And Hatchard wouldn’t be surprised to see Kane prolong his stay with the German giants.

Speaking on Trans Euro Express with Andy Brassell and Lars Siversten, he said: “I always think when the debate comes up about him wanting to break the Premier League goalscoring record, I think that is a fundamental misunderstanding of the man.

“He is very focused on winning trophies. He is much more focused on winning trophies than individual records.

“He would happily score ten or 15 goals fewer if Bayern were guaranteed to win the treble.

“So, I think that plays into it too.”

Fitter than ever

While plenty of other players around Europe and the Premier League appear to be burning out, Kane isn’t.

The 32-year-old has made 43 appearances in all competitions for Bayern this term, but in the Bundesliga, his game time has come down.

That is partly due to the odd niggly injury, but also because Vincent Kompany is managing him.

This has been happening all season as well, with Kane sometimes playing around 30 minutes of matches.

And he’s still scored 51 goals in all competitions, including two across the Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid.

And with the World Cup approaching, Hatchard feels as if Kompany has dealt with the situation perfectly.

Hatchard added: “I think it’s a really good thing because going into the Euros, he had a back injury – I don’t think he looked fit. I think this is different.

“They are able to take him out of the firing line when they need to. Nicolas Jackson got a goal and played perfectly well, even though Jackson won’t be there next season, it does show that Kompany has the gravitas and he has the pull to say to Kane, ‘Mate, I know you want to play every game, but you can’t.’

“Kane will accept that from Kompany, and he will accept being stood down.”

Kane’s future

Talks over a new deal at Bayern are underway with Kane, but negotiations over wages and terms are yet to start.

That is according to the club’s director of sport Max Eberl, who provided an update on the situation in February.

Kane’s current deal expires in 2027, so a cut-price move could be on the cards if a new deal can’t be agreed.

And on the contract, Eberl said: “We are talking, that doesn’t mean negotiations have started. We are in intensive talks with Harry, then the next steps will follow.

“I can’t comment on the rumours circulating that someone is preparing anything (on a transfer bid for Kane).

“All I can say is that we are in close contact with Harry regarding him and our success.”
