Harry Kane and Bayern Munich denied club history in shock Bundesliga result

Bayern Munich have been denied the chance of registering an unbeaten Bundesliga season following a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Augsburg.

Vincent Kompany’s side slipped to their first loss of the season on Saturday, missing the chance to emulate the perfect campaign achieved by Bayer Leverkusen in their title winning season of 2023/24.

While Bayern have achieved almost every possible record in German football, the one feat they have yet to attain is an unbeaten domestic campaign.

The Bundesliga giants raced into a first-half lead through Hiroki Ito only to be pegged back with 15 minutes to go.

Bayern pressed forward for a winner but the visitors had other ideas when Han-Noah Massengo found himself in acres of space to fire home from 12 yards with just nine minutes remaining.

With the last kick of the match Michael Olise’s superb curling effort crashed off the crossbar as 13th-place Augsburg staged an unlikely victory at the Allianz Arena, leaving Harry Kane and co. stunned.

The results sees Bayern maintain their 11-point advantage at the top of the Bundesliga table but the gap could be cut to eight points if Borussia Dortmund win at Union Berlin on Saturday evening.

Augsburg’s win sees them end Bayern’s second-longest unbeaten run in the Bundesliga which stood at 27 games.

And its not the first time they have gatecrashed the party having ended Bayern’s 53-game unbeaten run with their only previous away win in Munich in May 2015.

But it is likely to be nothing more than a blip for Kompany’s men who have powered past their opponents with ease this season.

After 19 league games, Bayern have netted a staggering 72 goals and boast a goal difference of 52.

And it has been much the same in Europe with Kane and co already securing their spot in the round of 16.

The only blemish on their European season came in November’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Last weekend’s 5-1 thrashing of RB Leipzig saw Kompany’s team become only the third ever side to have won 16 of their opening 18 matches of a Bundesliga season.

Pep Guardiola managed the feat twice with his Bayern sides of 2013/14 and 2015/16.

There are, however, other records to be reached for Bayern’s current crop.

The Bundesliga all-time points record stands at 91, set by Jupp Heynckes’ treble-winning team of 2012/13.

Meanwhile, the Bundesliga goals record of 101 is still to be shot at with Bayern boasting their most prolific frontline since the days of Robert Lewandowski, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery.

And Kane is likely to be the key to any record-breaking achievements this season.

The England skipper has netted 21 times in 18 league games – more than struggling trio Hamburg, St Pauli and Heidenheim.

While Kane wasn’t his usual self against Augsburg, he will have the opportunity to set the record straight when Bayern travel to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday.
