Draymond Green urges Adam Silver to step in over Blazers ownership
The Portland Trail Blazers have their backs against the wall when they take on the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of their first-round series in the playoffs at Frost Bank Center on Tuesday.
The Trail Blazers are now on the brink of elimination after blowing a 19-point lead in Game 4.
Portland has been one of the pleasant surprises of the season, as not many gave the squad a chance to enter the playoffs.
But despite the inspired run, there have been concerns about the cost-cutting approach of team owner Tom Dundon, including not allowing the Trail Blazers’ two-way players to travel with the team and offering a low-ball contract to coach Tiago Splitter, among others.
Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, arguably the most outspoken player in the league, chimed in on the issue, stressing that NBA commissioner Adam Silver needs to look into it.
“You can’t call someone cheap who just spent $4.5 billion. Except when you do all things cheaply, you’re going to be called cheap. Because there is just a standard in the NBA of how people will be treated, how players will be treated,” said Green on his podcast.
“To just come in and do that differently right away, I understand Adam saying what he said, Adam’s got to approve this guy becoming an owner of a team, so I understand that. But Adam is going to have to get involved because these things can’t keep happening.”
Green has stated that he wants to be the NBA commissioner in the future.
According to Forbes, the 54-year-old Dundon has a net worth of $2.3 billion. He is part of the investor group that bought the Trail Blazers for $4.25 billion in March.
Dundon, who made his fortune in vehicle financing, also owns the Carolina Hurricanes in the NHL.
Other cost-cutting measures of Dundon also include not allowing late hotel checkouts, even during game days, and doing away with the free t-shirts for fans at Moda Center.
