Draymond Green cautions Rockets HC Ime Udoka’s blame game coaching tactics

There was a general sense of frustration and disappointment surrounding the Houston Rockets after their painful collapse back on Friday night in a 112-108 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 3 of their first-round series.

Rockets head coach Ime Udoka, as he’s done all year long, was not afraid to put his players on blast for letting a six-point lead slip away in the span of 20 seconds after fouling a three-point shooter and turning the ball over in the backcourt.

Over and over again, Udoka has gone to the media and called his players out. It’s not quite clear if this was the best way to address his players, especially after such a painful defeat, and Golden State Warriors veteran Draymond Green urged the Rockets head coach to proceed with caution lest he loses the locker room completely.

“I would just warn Ime to be careful there because in today’s day and age, I had to learn and deal with younger guys. Like guys will quit on you, I’ve seen it. I’ve seen it all around the league guys just quit on the coach. So I would caution Ime just to be careful there,” Green said on the latest episode of his eponymous podcast.

It can be a bit frustrating for players to see themselves get called out in the media when losing a ballgame in the manner the Rockets did back on Friday involves the entire team — not just the players, but the coaches as well.

Green perhaps is urging Udoka to take more accountability himself for the way he failed to put the Rockets in more auspicious positions.

“I think his players made all types of mistakes to lose that game, but you still got to take some credit in the collapse, and he didn’t. Maybe he knows his team better than I know them because they responded and they got a game,” Green added.

The Rockets did win Game 4, and in convincing fashion as well, but nothing changes the fact that they’re still down 3-1 against the Lakers with Game 5 on Wednesday being on the road.
