Grand National jockey hospitalised as update is given on fallen horses

Jockey Robbie Dunne was taken to hospital after he fell off Stellar Story during the Grand National.

Stellar Story was one of several who did not reach the finish line at Aintree, with the Gordon Elliott-trained horse exiting the race at the open ditch.

Unfortunately for Dunne, he was left worse for wear following the incident.

Updates on Dunne and fallen horses

Such was the nature of Dunne’s fall, on-site medics had the jockey taken to hospital for further assessments, where he is thankfully conscious and talking.

Aside from Dunne, there was concern for horses Top Of The Bill and Quai De Bourbon who both fell during the Grand National.

Vision from Racing TV showed Top Of The Bill was up and walking around following on-track treatment.

As for the Willie Mullins-trained Quai De Bourbon, which fell at the second fence, it walked onto an ambulance for further assessment.

The duo were just two of several horses who tumbled at various stages of the Grand National.

Grangeclare West went down at the first fence while Panic Attack, who was favoured by a number of punters, fell at the third.

It wasn’t long before Gerri Colombe and Mr Vango exited the Grand National having either fallen or had their jockey unseated.

Banbridge and Oscars Brother went out at the chair while Jagwar, another horse considered a serious contender, wasn’t far behind.

In total, a staggering 18 horses failed to finish the race.

Who won the 2026 Grand National?

Despite the carnage unfolding on the track at Aintree, race favourite I Am Maximus held strong to win the 2026 Grand National.

Jockey Paul Townend, who came under fire on Friday after Gold Dancer was put down, produced a sensational ride to steer I Am Maximus home, reeling in all of his rivals in the final furlongs.

It proved to be an expensive result for the bookies, with one punter even pocketing a cool £900,000 from the race.

But for Townend, he was keen to put the spotlight on the Willie Mullins-trained horse and heaped praise on its engine.

Townend: I Am Maximus will ‘gallop to the end of the world’

“He’s tough, isn’t he,” Townend said of I Am Maximus.

“He still didn’t travel with the enthusiasm of the first year but the cheekpieces helped in the middle of the race.”
