Gonzaga fans shocked after Texas steals upset in March Madness win

Gonzaga basketball hit a March Madness mark not seen in 21 years: Consecutive Round of 32 exits. This time Texas left fans of the Bulldogs in shambles by winning 74-68 Saturday. And this is a Gonzaga team that’s advanced past the first round for 17 straight seasons.

Fans called out the No. 3 seed after the loss.

“Very poor defensive coverage on those and also on the last one. Can’t give them a 3…and we give them a 3. Didn’t even give ourselves a chance,” the fan posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter. The same fan also believes Graham Ike is on his way out.

Other fans ripped Gonzaga by calling them “frauds” and overrated by landing high seeds each season, but falling early. Gonzaga even got placed on upset alert before the tournament. However many fans and analysts still believed the West Coast Conference power could still make a deep run.

Is Gonzaga losing March Madness touch after Texas loss?

Fans of the Bulldogs expect NCAA Tournament appearances now from Gonzaga. Head coach Mark Few has led the ‘Zags to the tourney every single season (minus the truncated 2019-2020 season due to COVID-19) since he took over in 1999-2000.

Few lifted Gonzaga to newer heights in the 2019 and 2021 tournaments by landing in the national title game. But Gonzaga has experienced March disappointment since then.

Gonzaga hasn’t advanced past the Sweet 16 since that ’21 Final Four run. Few and ‘Zaga haven’t experienced the second exits since 2003 to 2005.

Now an 11-seed plus play-in representative topples the ‘Zags. Yet this Texas team stumbled into the tournament after losing five of its last six games before igniting this run.
