‘Goal of the season’ – EFL star scores incredible goal from inside his own half

Ryan Ledson may have ended the goal of the season contest for 2025/26 thanks to an stunning strike from inside his own half.

As Luton Town player Mads Andersen attempted to play a pass into midfield, the ball fell kindly to Huddersfield midfielder Ledson.

And rather than take a touch and look to pick out a teammate, the 28-year-old spotted Hatters goalkeeper Josh Keeley off his line and opted to instead go for goal from just behind the halfway line.

Ledson’s second half strike was his second league goal of the season, having opened his account against Port Vale on Boxing Day.

Former Terriers captain Tommy Smith was watching the action at the John Smith’s Stadium on Sky Sports, and was briefly left speechless.

“It’s goal of the season!” he exclaimed.

“Absolute goal of the season, honestly. Wait until you see this, it’s an unbelievable strike.

“The goalkeeper’s on the edge of his box, Luton give the ball away in the middle of the park and it falls to Ryan Ledson.

“Watch how sweetly he hits this ball!

“It’s an unbelievable strike. When he hit it, I’m thinking to myself: ‘Surely not’.

“But he’s hit it so cleanly. It’s unbelievable. Goal of the season. Absolute goal of the season.”

Ledson only moved to Huddersfield over the summer, joining from Preston North End, where he had spent seven years following his switch to Deepdale in 2018.

Impressively still, Huddersfield went ahead despite being reduced to ten men in the first half.

Alfie May was shown his marching orders for an apparent hair pull on midfielder Kasey Palmer midway through the first half.
