Giants’ Jung Hoo Lee makes intriguing admission on unreal play vs. Cubs

The San Francisco Giants were up 4-1 in the eighth inning of their Sunday night clash against the Chicago Cubs. Logan Webb was still on the mound, although the game was far from over, as the Cubs were still knocking on the door with one runner at second base and Michael Busch at the plate. And it looked as though Busch was going to pull one more run back for the Cubs, as he sent a four-seamer right at the heart of the plate towards deep right field.

Considering how spacious the Oracle Park outfield is, that ball could have gone anywhere. But under the watchful eye of right fielder Jung Hoo Lee, that ball was not landing anywhere outside his glove. Lee tracked the ball all the way going to his left even against the sun, and he made a bonkers catch that took him all the way to the wall — forcing him to spin to avoid a full-blown collision.

Lee was going at full speed, so he needed to put on the brakes in an instant to avoid a potential injury, all while having to keep the ball in his glove. The Giants right fielder needed to get it right, and that’s exactly what he did, fueled by his desire to keep Webb’s start as clean as possible.

“I just knew that Webby wanted to finish the inning… After that shoulder injury (2024) every time I make a fence play like that I feel like my body gets a little cold, but today I just wanted to make the catch for Webby,” Lee said in a postgame interview, via KNBR.

Lee notably suffered a brutal injury after crashing onto the center field wall in a game against the Cincinnati Reds; he ended up playing just 37 games that year after tearing his labrum and dislocating his left shoulder.

It takes guts to play the outfield in the big leagues, and Lee has that in spades. Webb certainly has to give him a little something for that impressive running grab.
