Furious Ederson hits VAR booth after getting sent off and has bizarre clash with referee

Fenerbahce goalkeeper Ederson couldn’t contain his anger after he was sent off in a fiery derby clash against Galatasaray.

The former Manchester City star made the move to Turkey last summer, joining in an £11million deal on deadline day after Gianluigi Donnarumma’s arrival at the Etihad.

Since then, Ederson has been a mainstay between the sticks, and made his 24th league start in an away clash at rivals Galatasaray on Sunday.

The fixture is Turkey’s biggest derby, and it lived up to this label at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium after an incident involving the 32-year-old.

Ederson was shown a second yellow card for dissent on 62 minutes, which led to his side suffering a second-half collapse.

Seeing red

The controversy unfolded after Galatasaray were awarded a penalty, who were already 1-0 up at the time.

Referee Yasin Kol gave Ederson a second yellow card for delaying the spot-kick, leaving the Brazilian furious.

He angrily confronted Kol, arguing in the official’s face, but replays soon showed another side to this.

Footage revealed that the referee tried to push the ex-Man City star’s head away in a headbutt-like fashion.

Ederson exited the pitch shortly after, and was clearly still livid with the dismissal as he headed towards the tunnel.

In fact, the Brazil international was so furious that he was then shown punching the VAR monitor on his way inside.

Fenerbahce fell apart after Ederson’s dismissal, with Baris Yilmaz putting them 2-0 up from the spot immediately afterwards.

After Victor Osimhen‘s opener, Galatasaray then sealed a huge 3-0 victory when ex-Arsenal midfielder Lucas Toreira added a third late on.

Victory earned Gala the bragging rights, and extended their lead at the top of the Super Lig table by seven points.

Galatasaray claim they won ‘despite referees’

Despite a huge win and appearing to benefit from a key decision with Ederson’s sending off, Galatasaray were also left unhappy with the refereeing in their clash with Fenerbahce.

They accused referees in Turkey of having ‘evil inside’ them, claiming they should have been awarded two more penalties in a furious half-time post on their official X account.

The post read: “Despite the two penalties not awarded to us, we’re closing out the first half 1-0 ahead.

“Despite these referees, we’re still leading 1-0. We see what you’re doing, your plans, the evil inside you. This order won’t go on like this.

“We’re here, we won’t be silent! In the end, the good ones will win again!”

The Turkish giants’ furious post came just days after suspending relations with the Turkish Football Federation in a dispute about picking referees for games.

Issues between Turkish Super Lig clubs and referees have become a major talking point over the past couple of years.

In 2025, then Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho was handed a two-match ban and fined £12,2000 after appearing to question the impartiality of match officials.

Teams have also previously walked off the pitch in protest over refereeing decisions.
