Phil Parkinson says Wrexham hope to complete first summer transfer this week
Phil Parkinson has given Wrexham fans a positive transfer update as the club looks to make its first summer signing.
The Red Dragons are yet to add to their squad following last season’s seventh place finish in the Championship.
Parkinson’s side missed out on the play-offs by just two points on their return to the second tier.
Several players have since left the club, including the likes of Paul Mullin, Jay Rodriguez and Andy Cannon.
Former loanee Issa Kabore also returned to parent club Manchester City at the end of the campaign.
Meanwhile, Wrexham also missed out on the signing of goalkeeper Pierce Charles, who has instead joined QPR on a season-long loan.
Wrexham transfer update
However, Parkinson has now revealed on talkSPORT’s The Final Word with Alan Pardew and Majestic a first signing of the transfer window will ‘hopefully’ join the club this week.
Highlighting the different challenges faced compared to 12 months ago, he explained on Sunday: “I think last year we put 14 players in.
“You bring the players in different stages of pre-season. Some deals take longer than others, people moving into the area and it took us a while to find our feet in the division and also, I had players adapting to that.
“But I feel we’ve got a better, stronger squad in this pre-season and it’s been great to work with the group so far, which we put together last season.
“However, I don’t feel we’re there yet in terms of the squad. We’re not resting on our laurels and thinking, we’re seventh and we’re just going to naturally progress above that.
“We’ve got to work on the recruitment and we’re closing in on our first signing, hopefully this week.
“You’ve got to be patient in your recruitment, but we still need to strengthen the squad for me to get a real feeling of confidence that we’re ready to go and take it a step further.
“But we’ve got some good players and we were close. It’s a very exciting season because it’s going to be as competitive as ever.”
The signing in question could be that of Fiorentina defender Matias Moreno.
Wrexham have reportedly agreed a £7.2million fee with the Serie A side for the 22-year-old.
His potential arrival would come less than two weeks before the club’s first competitive fixture of the season.
The Red Dragons travel to face Middlesbrough in the first round of the Carabao Cup on Friday, August 7.
They then begin their Championship campaign away to Welsh rivals Cardiff City on August 17.
Behind-the-scenes
Parkinson also lifted the lid on the challenges he faces whilst coaching on camera as part of Welcome to Wrexham.
The behind-the-scenes documentary series recently released its fifth season following the players, staff and fans of the club.
Asked what it is like to coach on camera, Parkinson added: “I think all you can be is just be yourself, and the best thing I can do to tell the story is to get the team to win games of football.
“It’s about building relationships up with the producers, both over in Wrexham and over here in America.
“And we’ve done that, and there’s an element of trust between both parties, and we know we’ve got to give them complete access to be able to tell the story.
“But also, they’re very respectful as well. So we’ve worked together and the editing and the way they’ve told the story has been brilliant, because that’s a great skill.
“But they’re also appreciative of the drama the team’s created, and the success has obviously impacted greatly on the success of the documentary as well.”
Wrexham are currently on tour in the States where they will face Liverpool in New York at 12:30am GMT on Thursday before taking on Sunderland in Philadelphia on Sunday at 5pm GMT.
