Florida State HC Mike Norvell hit with urgent hot seat warning from analyst

Florida State football appeared to be back after the 2023 season that saw them go 13-0 before getting snubbed from the College Football Playoff due to an injury to quarterback Jordan Travis. In 2024, the Seminoles entered the season as a top 10 team and Mike Norvell appeared to have them on the right path.

Since then, things have only gone downhill. The Noles stumbled to a 2-10 record in 2024 before an uninspiring 5-7 campaign in 2025 as Norvell’s seat continued to heat up.

Despite that, the 2023 ACC Coach of the Year is getting another chance to turn things around in Tallahassee in 2026. However, he won’t be able to survive another bad year. Roy Philpott sent a warning to Norvell about his job security and laid out what he needs to do to get in good graces with the Florida State administration, and its fans, on Sirius XM Radio.

“The expectations are for them to win now,” Philpott said on Sirius XM. “You’ve run out of time, you’ve run out of not enough winning seasons. And it’s not only like I think getting at least eight wins, I just think optically there’s got to be some games in there that remind you of what it used to be. They remind you of the fear of the war chant. If that isn’t there, and you’re 7-5, I mean, Mike Norvell would probably even tell you at that point, we need to make a change here. It hasn’t worked out.”

Unfortunately for Norvell, this Florida State roster doesn’t look like the kind of group that is going to automatically turn things around for the Seminoles. Duce Robinson is one of the best wide receivers in all of college football and has NFL potential as a big red zone threat on the outside, but whether he is able to get involved in the offense consistently is a major question.

Ashton Daniels, a transfer from Auburn and previously Stanford, is the quarterback for Norvell and company this season, and his success or failure may very well be what decides Norvell’s future in Tallahassee.
