Nottingham Forest will travel to the Turkish capital of Istanbul with their fourth permanent manager of the season in the dugout. As former Wolves gaffer Vitor Pereira takes charge of his first match with the club.

Pereira, who has coached Fenerbahce on two separate occasions, took over at the City Ground from the sacked Sean Dyche last week, ahead of this crunch two-legged Europa League playoff with his former club.

Forest finished in a respectable 13th place with 14 points in the Europa League table. They won four of their eight matches, losing just two.

Their Turkish opponents were six places below in 19th, picking up 12 points, but this two-legged affair looks evenly matched.

The Europa League has often been some pleasant respite in Forest’s torrid Premier League season.

But can Pereira be the man to revitalise a squad that were challenging for the top five in the league last campaign?

Goals on the menu

Fenerbahce are second in the Turkish Super Lig, three points behind rivals Galatasaray.

However, the way to go might be the goals angle in this tie. Both teams have scored, in six of Fenerbahce’s last eight matches in all competitions.

As for Forest, they’ve only netted twice in their last three Premier League matches. But dispatched Robbie Keane’s Ferencvaros 4-0 in the last Europa League outing.

It will be intriguing to see Pereira’s first Forest starting line-up, as he admitted his tactical flexibility depending on the player’s at his disposal. “And I express by creating a style to play… it’s like a painting. Each club, each team, we can create a different style of play,” he said.

He will have Lorenzo Lucca available for selection, but whether he chooses to play a five in midfield or go with two up front away from home, will tell us a lot about Pereira’s approach.

Fenerbahce did stay undefeated in their four home matches in the league phase. Forest should be happy to take a draw back to the City Ground next week.
