Ex-Seahawks and Dolphins running back shares emotional statement as he retires from NFL aged 29
Former Seattle Seahawks and Miami Dolphins running back Myles Gaskin has announced his retirement from the NFL.
The 29-year-old spent part of last season in Seattle, and played one game before being waived by the team that went on to win Super Bowl LX.
Gaskin entered the NFL in 2019, as a seventh-round draft pick for the Dolphins.
He played four seasons in Miami, and had his best campaign in 2021, playing in all 17 games.
Gaskin also featured less frequently for the Los Angeles Rams and Minnesota Vikings.
He announced his decision to step away from the NFL on Wednesday, in an emotional social media post.

NFL running back Myles Gaskin retires aged 29
“Thank you, God; you have allowed me to live my childhood’s greatest dream, which was to play the game I loved at the highest level,” Gaskin wrote, sharing photos and videos from his college and NFL career on X.
“You have allowed it for seven years as a professional, four years in the greatest setting in college football as a Dawg at the University of Washington. Before that, at O’Dea High School… and before that as a Richmond Bulldog.
“Thank you to all those who showed love and support both on and off the field. To the Miami Dolphins, boy was that fun. To the Seattle Seahawks, thank you for letting me play my last snaps back at the crib.
“To the fans, you make this game special every Friday, Saturday, Sunday… Monday, Thursday — really, every day, eight months out of the year.
“To the staff, the organizations, my teammates, and coaches at every level, there are too many laughs, stories, and lessons to name, but every snap helped me grow into the man always wanted to become.”
Gaskin then went on to thank a number of specific people in his life, including both his parents, and signed off with an emotional tribute to the game itself.
“Football… there will never be enough words to explain how I feel about you, so I won’t even try,” he added, having followed another young star, 28-year-old cornerback Sam Webb, into retirement.
“What I will do is give all the game you gave me to the next generation of young players who dare to be great. Thank you. It’s been real.”
Myles Gaskin was college star who put together six-year NFL career
Before landing in the NFL, Gaskin was a standout in college with the Washington Huskies.
He became starting running back for his true freshman year in 2015, and was the first true freshman in school history to rush for over 1,000 yards.
Gaskin went on to become the first Pac-12 player with four 1,000-plus rushing-yard-seasons, and he led the 2018 Huskies to conference championship and the Rose Bowl.
He finished his career at Washington with a string of school records, including an impressive high of 62 touchdowns, and the most all-purpose yards, with 5,878.
In the NFL, he carved out a six-year career, and retires with a total of 1,360 rushing yards and seven rushing scores. Gaskin added 712 yards and six TDs as a receiver.
While his most productive years came with the Dolphins, he was able to finish of his career in his home state, with the Seahawks.
