English National League star joins Spanish club in unique role two months after signing new deal

National League outfit Worthing have surprised fans by revealing Sam Beard has left the club two months after signing a new deal.

The club’s vice-captain has completed a move to CD Atlético de Marbella Paraíso, which includes an academy coaching role.

The 28-year-old has made 200 appearances across the National League and National League South during his career.

The former Dorking, Barnet, and Eastbourne Borough player is now heading to Marbella to join a newly-promoted fifth-tier side.

The left-back has followed in the footsteps of his father, Mark Beard, who had a spell at Spanish lower league side San Pedro after his stints at the likes of Millwall, Sheffield United, and Southend.

Former Brighton & Hove Albion youngster Beard was an integral part of Worthing’s promotion to the National League last season.

‘Beardy’ started eight out of the club’s final nine matches as the Mackerel Men were crowned National League South champions.

His manager Adam Hinshelwood – father of Brighton player Jack – was delighted to tie Beard down to a fresh contract in May.

“Beardy signing is a massive boost for us,” the 42-year-old revealed.

“He was a big part of our success towards the end of the season and is a player that has National League experience, which is going to be vital for our squad.”

Beard himself added: “I’m buzzing to extend my stay another year and play for this club in the National League.”

However, two months later, Worthing confirmed an agreement has been reached with Atlético de Marbella Paraíso for Beard’s transfer.

The Reds also revealed that alongside representing the Albicelestes as a player, their No.3 ‘will also work as a coach in their academy systems, contributing to several teams and age groups.’

Having helped return fifth-tier football to the Sussex Transport Community Stadium, Beard’s new team achieved an identical promotion at the end of last season.

The phoenix club, who were born from the now defunct CA Marbella in 2010, will compete in the Tercera Federación this season for the first time in their existence.

Worthing, meanwhile, have already signed a new full-back this summer after agreeing a deal to loan QPR talent Cory Adjetey-Brew.

He joins fellow Queens Park Rangers teenager Harvey Boddy in spending the 2026/27 campaign with Hinshelwood’s side.
