Emotional Bryson DeChambeau admits he hated shock win over LIV Golf wildcard in Singapore

Bryson DeChambeau cut an emotional figure following his bitter-sweet win at the LIV Golf Singapore event.

The two-time major champion shot a final round 66 to force a playoff with LIV wildcard Richard T. Lee.

Despite finding the water with his tee shot on the first extra hole, DeChambeau managed to rescue par.

Lee then had a short putt to also make his par but pulled it left from just a couple of feet to hand victory to a stunned DeChambeau.

It was DeChambeau’s first win since LIV Golf Korea last May and his first 72 hole event triumph since the 2024 US Open.

Despite claiming glory, the manner of how the win was secured left a sour taste with the 32-year-old and his heart went out to his rival.

Lee, who has played his career almost exclusively on the Asian and Korean Tours, qualified for LIV in January by winning the Promotions Event and gave it his all at Serapong.

A clearly emotional DeChambeau said: “You never want to win that way, I’ll be the first to admit that.

“It’s happened before, golf is a fickle and uneasy game at a lot of moments, that’s just sometimes how the cards fall.

“There’s been numerous people that have done that and I don’t ever want to be a part of that and feel like this.

“I wanted to go another hole against him but I’m grateful it happened and to be on the positive end of it.

“I just didn’t see that happening and it’s tough to see that – I absolutely hated it.

“For Richard, he’s been playing some unbelievable golf. He’s beat me in a few of the rounds I’ve played with him, and he’s a stellar player.

“I wanted to go another hole with him. As much as winning is great, I have a lot of respect for Richard and the way he golfs his ball up there, and it was quite impressive.

“I was coming down the last three holes and I think I’m one ahead of everybody and seeing Richard go and play the way he did finishing out, he’s a real superstar.

“The league should be really proud to have him on as a wildcard.”

With The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass also taking place this weekend, DeChambeau’s win was a timely reminded of his quality with the Masters just around the corner

He added: “This was huge for me.

“With it being wet conditions, thick blades and struggling with my wedges, to get it done was quite memorable.”

DeChambeau will be eyeing another win next week as the LIV circuit travels to South Africa before he heads to Augusta National for the first major of the year.

DeChambeau has finished T5 and T6 in the last two Masters Tournaments and has six top tens in the last eight majors, including his US Open win at Pinehurst.

He’ll be among the favourites to claim a Green Jacket next month alongside defending champion Rory McIlroy and world number one Scottie Scheffler.
