Knicks’ Karl-Anthony Towns reflects on improbable Game 4 comeback before Game 5

As the New York Knicks prepare for Game 5 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, the team is still reeling after a spectacular 107-106 win in Game 4, completing a historic comeback after being down by as much as 29 points. Thanks to Knicks star OG Anunoby and his heroics in putting the team in front with the game-winning bucket, the rest of the team was at their best as Karl-Anthony Towns reflects on the comeback.

Speaking to Chris Haynes before Game 5 of the NBA Finals in San Antonio, Towns would answer what led to the comeback and how New York has been in that same position before. The latest example was against the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, where the team was down 22 points and still won.

“We all just wanted to contribute to winning,” Towns said. “And OG [Anunoby] with an amazing follow-up on the miss, and a lot of key defensive stops that we made at the end as a team spoke volumes about our team, our camaraderie, our resiliency, the grit…We had every chance in the book to let go of the rope, but experience kicked in, and we remember what we did last year at Boston, remember what we did in game one against Cleveland…we knew we just had to put ourselves in the position to win and give ourselves a chance.”

While the 29-point comeback from the Knicks was stupendous, Towns would credit the experience that the team has had in the same situation, though admitting the roster would rather put themselves in precarious spots.

“We didn’t play to our standards, we didn’t play Knicks basketball, and in the second half, regardless of how that game was going to end, we needed to show our best version, so that we could know going into the next game, we showed the best version of ourselves,” Towns said.

Towns and New York look to close out the series in Game 5 on Saturday night against the Spurs and win a championship for the first time since 1973.
