EFL club considering future of new manager after less than six weeks in charge

West Brom boss Eric Ramsay’s future is in doubt after fewer than six weeks in charge, talkSPORT understands.

Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at home to Coventry means Ramsay, recruited from MLS side Minnesota United last month, has failed to win any of his seven games in charge.

As it stands, the Baggies sit in 21st spot in the Championship.

Thankfully for West Brom, they will not finish the weekend in the bottom three.

Leicester couldn’t capitalise on their slip-up, as they were held to a 2-2 draw against Stoke, leaving them a point behind.

Prior to Saturday’s defeat, there were growing doubts over Ramsay’s future as West Brom boss.

The Welshman has received backlash from fans in recent weeks with the Baggies deep in the relegation battle.

Ramsay is yet to win any of his eight games in charge, losing five and drawing three.

Poor performance

Speaking to media, including talkSPORT, after the defeat at The Hawthorns, Ramsay expressed unhappiness at his side’s lack of intent having managed just one shot on target in the match.

“I was extremely disappointed with the manner of the goals and coming away with nothing, which in our situation is certainly far from ideal, not what we would have wanted in any way,” he said.

“It felt like we started the game in the first five minutes, very positively aggressive connection with the crowd, real energy, and we’ve really let ourselves down on five or six minutes.

“Unfortunately, another follows that relatively quickly and we give ourselves a mountain to climb from that point.

“If you look at the balance of the game so far, we are lacking a spark. We’re lacking the ability to create really clear-cut chances. It’s not escaping our attention and it really needs some work.”

Ramsay admits he was aware of the scale of the task before his arrival at The Hawthorns and says the inherent pressure is part of the job.

“It was a high pressure situation when I came in and it’s still a high pressure situation,” he added.

“It certainly hasn’t been what I would have envisaged as ideal in any way. But I knew what I was coming into. I knew I was inheriting a difficult situation.

“I knew it was going to have to turn around quick and if it didn’t, pressure would come with that.

“Of course I’m not naive enough to think that doesn’t go with this situation. I’m one of those people that is able to keep myself very much in the moment and try and make sure that the group is moving forward and I’m doing everything I can in that sense.”

Fan unrest

Sections of the crowd could be heard chanting ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ at the Albion boss.

Despite the disgruntlement from the stands, Ramsay says his focus remains on getting his side out of danger.

“That’s not something I can control. I understand everything that goes with this situation.

“I understand everything that goes with this situation in this particular league and this particular context. That doesn’t come as a surprise to me.

“It doesn’t weigh too heavy on my mind. I’m one of those people that can keep my head in what is important and what is controllable.”

Asked if he believes he is still the right person to turn around the club’s fortunes, he said: “I absolutely have to believe that. I wouldn’t be in this position if I didn’t think that was the case.

“The situation I inherited has worsened, but it wasn’t dissimilar to this situation.

“I came into this situation feeling a real sense of optimism, positivity and an ability to meet the situation with the level-headedness and the skill that’s required to turn it around.

“That hasn’t changed but it’s a difficult situation. I’ve got to make sure that I do what is right on a day-to-day basis and make sure I push the group.”

Saturday’s defeat to leaders Coventry will have done little to boost his side’s hopes in what was a pivotal week in their bid for survival.

West Brom welcome fellow strugglers Charlton to The Hawthorns on Tuesday evening before a crunch trip to 23rd-placed Oxford United next Saturday.
