EFL club confirm deal for son of Bayern Munich legend

Sam Kuffour Jr, son of former Bayern Munich and Ghana legend Samuel Osei Kuffour, has extended his contract at Colchester United.

The news was confirmed in the club’s summer retained list, capping off a remarkable rise for a defender who was playing in the eighth tier of English football just twelve months ago.

The Kuffour name reminds fans of a defensive powerhouse. His father, Samuel, spent over a decade part of the German giants’ backline.

While there, he famously lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2001 alongside six Bundesliga titles.

Like father, like son

However, his 22-year-old son is now making his own legacy in Essex, after spending time at various academies including at Brentford and West Ham as well as non-league stints with Cheshunt and Maldon & Tiptree.

With the season concluded, Colchester have released their retained list, with the defender among others who have had their options taken up by the club.

In February 2025, Kuffour Jr signed with the U’s, though he didn’t make his first-team debut until October.

His performances have earned rave reviews from manager Danny Cowley, and the defender has reflected on his own mentality and development.

After a narrow 1-0 defeat to Notts County in April, he reflected: “I think it’s the most minutes I’ve got this season, but I think I gave a good account of myself today.

“I still thought I’ve did really well, even against a striker who is big and physical.

“I held my own, and hopefully more opportunities will come.

“I’ve definitely got some targets set for next season, but I’ll use the summer to recuperate. Try to better myself.

“I will still training in the off-season to come back better and give myself a better chance to push on next season.”

The Colchester boss recently complimented the youngster after his standout appearance in their 4-1 victory over Cheltenham.

“I was so pleased for Sam, a boy who was playing for Maldon & Tiptree this time last year in step eight of English football,” Cowley said.

“He’s trained every day and he works incredibly hard at his game. He came back from a good loan at Hornchurch and really deserved his start today.

“He was excellent, even when they brought Mo Faal on, who is such a handful. He dealt with him really well. I’m proud of him.”

Colchester wasted no time in securing the defender’s future, alongside first-team stars like Teddy Bishop and Jack Payne, as they look to build a squad capable of climbing the League Two table next season.

Kuffour Jr will hope to emulate a career like his dad, who represented Ghana 53 times and was inducted in the country’s football Hall of Fame.

The senior was described by legendary manager Ottmar Hitzfeld as the ‘soul’ of Bayern’s backline.

However, his son won’t want to be handed a golden ticket because of his surname and he has shown he possesses the same grit his father displayed decades ago.
