Dominik Szoboszlai shoots down Liverpool legend comparisons as he’s called ‘one of best in world’

Dominik Szoboszlai shot down comparisons with Steven Gerrard after Mohamed Salah claimed he is one of the best players in the world.

The Hungarian continued his outstanding individual season after scoring in Liverpool‘s 3-0 FA Cup fourth-round win over Brighton.

The 25-year-old has arguably proved to be the only Reds star to have raised their level from last season, while many of his teammates have consistently struggled to hit their top form.

Despite often playing out of position at right-back, Szoboszlai has scored 10 goals and registered seven assists in all competitions.

His strike against Brighton saw him equal his total goal contributions from last campaign in 14 fewer matches for Arne Slot‘s side.

He has registered a goal or assist in all but one of Liverpool’s eight Champions League matches and scored stunning free-kicks against both Arsenal and Manchester City.

Having worn the No.8 shirt since arriving at Anfield in 2023, Szoboszlai has naturally drawn comparisons with Reds icon Gerrard.

The Hungary captain – who is also renowned for scoring long-range stunners – even has a tattoo inspired by the ex-Liverpool skipper.

Fittingly against Brighton, Szoboszlai was told he is having a ‘Steven Gerrard season’, with the latter synonymous with the FA Cup following his heroics in the 2006 final triumph.

However, Szoboszlai told TNT Sports: “I’m not playing a Steven Gerrard season, although he was a legend for the club.

“I just try to do my own story, and I try to do my best every game. Hopefully, we can go on until the end.

“I don’t score every time, but the last couple of times, it’s been fine! I just want to keep going and score as many as I can.”

Salah: Szoboszlai one of best in the world

Salah, who was mounting a Ballon d’Or charge last year, showed signs of returning to his best level after winning and converting a penalty.

Yet the Egyptian insisted that Liverpool’s ability to win the FA Cup for the first time since 2022 will depend on Szoboszlai more than him.

Salah said: “It’s going to depend on his [Szoboszlai’s] performance [if Liverpool win the cup], because we rely on him so much this season.

“He’s one of the best players in the world right now, and I wish he can carry on like this.

“It’s great to win trophies, it’s good for everyone, and hopefully we can do it again.”

Asked if he agreed with Salah’s verdict, Liverpool boss Slot replied: “I think there are a lot of very good to elite football players in the world, but I definitely agree with Mo that Dom is one of them.”

He added: “Dominik is a great example of the model we are using at this club.

“We sign young players from another league, this situation Leipzig, where he was already known as a player for being really physical, but I think it’s fair for me to say the player we brought in was already good, but where is he now? He is much better than where he was two-and-a-half years ago.

“That is what you get if you sign young players, give them a bit of time and let them play a lot. That’s why the trajectory he has been through can be the same trajectory from other players we have signed from other leagues.

“You can already see their progress, but I’ve said many times that next season, at the end of the season or in two seasons, players like Hugo (Ekitike) and Florian (Wirtz), because these are two that come from the Bundesliga, will be better than they are now because they’re already good players for us.”
