Dodgers’ ex-star closer among relievers taking steps forward amid injury recovery
The Los Angeles Dodgers are already among the best teams in baseball, but they could be getting even stronger later this season. Relievers Evan Phillips, Brock Stewart and Jack Dreyer all threw on Tuesday, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. For Phillips, it was his first time facing hitters since having Tommy John surgery.
The Dodgers would love for Phillips to make an impact at some point this season. It remains to be seen when he will return, however. Nevertheless, Tuesday’s update is encouraging to say the least.
Phillips, 31, last appeared in an MLB game in 2025. The pitcher served as the Dodgers closer in 2023 and 2024, as he saved 24 games during the ’23 campaign and 18 games in 2024.
Edwin Diaz is currently injured, but he is now the Dodgers closer. Regardless, Phillips could end up playing an important role once he returns. He is more than capable of making a significant impact.
Los Angeles currently holds a 34-20 overall record so far during the 2026 MLB season. The Dodgers are 2.5 games ahead of the San Diego Padres for first place in the National League West standings. LA is looking to win its third consecutive World Series championship this year.
On Monday, the Dodgers earned a 5-3 victory against the Colorado Rockies at home. The second contest of the series will be played on Tuesday night, with first pitch scheduled for 10:10 PM EST at Dodger Stadium.
Meanwhile, updates on Evan Phillips, Brock Stewart and Jack Dreyer’s injury statuses will continue to be monitored and provided as they are made available.
