Dodgers’ Emmet Sheehan opens up about ugly outing vs. Cardinals

The Los Angeles Dodgers suffered an unlikely setback in their season. Los Angeles was matched up with one of the pleasant surprises of the 2026 MLB season: the St. Louis Cardinals. Emmet Sheehan took the mound for the team. While Sheehan struggled to start the year, allowing 13 runs in his four starts, a solid outing in his last start gave fans hope that he might have figured things out.

Instead, Sheehan had his worst outing since his first start in 2026. The Dodgers starter lasted just 4 2/3 innings against the Cardinals, during which he got lit up. Sheehan allowed eight hits and four runs, including three in the first inning alone. Those four runs set the tone in the game, as Los Angeles was not able to bounce back from that deficit. The Dodgers ended up losing the game 7-2, unable to dig themselves out of the hole.

Sheehan talked about his horrible start. In particular, the Dodgers pitcher talked about a crucial balk he committed in the first inning that led to the Cardinals scoring three runs. Sheehan said that he made an unacceptable mistake by not declaring that he was pitching from the stretch.

“I didn’t share that I was switching to the stretch,” Sheehan said, per SportsNet LA. “I know the rule. It was just in the moment, I didn’t declare it. And yeah, unacceptable.”

Sheehan also admitted that he and his team are still working out a few kinks in his pitching, which is leading to his erratic performances on the mound.

“There’s definitely a couple of different things,” Sheehan said. “I feel like we’ve been making progress and then taking a step back. It’s definitely frustrating. But we know what we need to work on. It’s just fixing it now.”

This is the Dodgers’ third straight loss, a rarity over the last few years for the team. The Dodgers have two more games against the Cardinals before heading to Houston for a three-game series against the Houston Astros.
