‘Disgraceful’ – Cristian Romero hits out at Tottenham Hotspur squad depth in shock statement

Cristian Romero has taken yet another thinly-veiled swipe at Tottenham Hotspur.

This time, it’s about their ‘disgraceful’ squad depth.

The World Cup winner shared his frustrations on Instagram the day after he featured in the first half of Spurs’ 2-2 draw against Manchester City, only to be taken off at the break due to illness.

“Great effort from all my teammates yesterday, they were incredible,” Romero, the Tottenham skipper, wrote.

“I wanted to be available to help them even though I wasn’t feeling well, especially since we only had 11 players available – unbelievable but true and disgraceful.

“We’ll keep showing up and taking responsibility to turn this around, working hard and staying together.

“All that’s left is to thank all of you for being there and for always supporting us, the fans.”

Against City, Tottenham boss Thomas Frank named four senior outfield players on the bench.

Mathys Tel, Wilson Odobert and Pape Matar Sarr all came on, as did 17-year-old defender Jun’ai Byfield.

Sarr came on in place of Romero at the interval, with Frank confirming post-match the Argentinian was taken off due to ‘illness’.

“So we are assessing him,” Frank added.

“Hopefully he is fine.

“He struggled through the Frankfurt game as well, but he pushed through that with a fantastic captain’s performance.

“He struggled a little bit [today], but we hope it’s nothing.”

Following Romero’s half-time substitution, Frank put Sarr into midfield as Joao Palhinha, a defensive midfielder, joined Radu Dragusin at the heart of defence.

It was Dragusin’s first start in over a year having overcome a serious knee injury.

Romero’s latest social post is not the first time he’s taken a dig at Tottenham’s hierarchy.

Following Tottenham’s 3-2 loss to Bournemouth in January, Romero questioned why members in the club’s hierarchy went quiet and left it to the players to communicate when things went awry on the pitch.

“At times like this, it should be other people coming out to speak, but they don’t – as has been happening for several years now,” Romero wrote.

“They only show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies.”

Romero later deleted the line, ‘To tell a few lies’, although the post remains on his Instagram.

The centre-back had previously had a pop at the Tottenham hierarchy in 2021 as he criticised the club’s lack of spending compared to their English rivals.
