Deion Sanders’ worst fear for Shedeur realized as Browns rookie faces brutal NFL test amid dire forecast

Shedeur Sanders could play his first NFL snow game Sunday — unlocking a new fear for dad Deion.

As he watched Caleb Williams heading from sunny USC to the Chicago Bears in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Colorado Buffaloes coach’s first thought was of his son Shedeur.

Primetime feared that the No. 1 overall pick would struggle to adapt to life in a cold climate.

At the time, Shedeur had played in Texas, Mississippi and Boulder — all under his Hall of Fame dad’s watchful eye.

“Like, I don’t want my kid going nowhere cold next year,”Deion said on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio with Chris Russo. “He grew up in Texas. He played in Jackson, played in Colorado.

“Season’s over before it gets cold in Colorado. I’m just thinking way ahead. I don’t want that for him.”

Deion wasn’t thrilled with Williams’ landing spot in the Windy City.

“A kid that’s coming from California for the last couple years, right? And went to Oklahoma. That’s not terribly cold. Chicago’s cold, man,” Sanders told Russo. “You gotta think about that kind of stuff when you’re taking a young man.

“Like see, when you take a guy from Ohio State and you bring him to Chicago, okay, I could understand that. But from California to Chicago?

“Not only that, they added what? One or two more games in the NFL. Seventeen games. Come on, man. You gotta factor in that stuff. That stuff matters.”

Deion’s prediction came true, although the cold may not have been a factor, as Williams struggled in his rookie season. The former Trojan has looked much improved under new coach Ben Johnson, however.

Unfortunately, beggars can’t be choosers and after Shedeur slid to the fifth round, there was little chance of him turning down Cleveland despite the bitter Ohio winters.

Footage from Friday’s practice showed what conditions could be like on Sunday as the Browns take on the San Francisco 49ers at Huntington Bank Field.

How did Shedeur Sanders do in his first NFL game?

Shedeur — getting ready for his second start after becoming the first Browns rookie to win on their full debut since 1995 — and his teammates were buffeted by snow on the field.

If you’re wondering what Sunday’s #Browns game might look like, see today’s practice—but perhaps even sloppier with rain/snow mix. Gusty winds,” beat reporter Camryn Justice wrote on X alongside the clip. “Keep that in mind when you’re setting expectations for the game plan you’re hoping to see.

Shedeur threw for over 200 yards and a touchdown against the Las Vegas Raiders, despite close attention from Maxx Crosby.

The Niners are a tough prospect with Robert Saleh calling plays.

In mild conditions, it would be a test. In driving snow, Shedeur will receive a baptism of fire.

Shedeur Sanders has handled every challenge thrown at him so far writes Jamie Gordon.

The Browns rookie has earned the right to prove he is the man going into 2026.

With two first-round picks, Cleveland could well opt for a QB, albeit from a class many consider to be poor.

Expect the Browns to run the ball hard and often on Sunday, unless head coach Kevin Stefanski really is trying to derail Shedeur’s career.

Spoiler alert. He isn’t.

Not that it will dent the 23-year-old’s confidence.

“We definitely game planned for him. He’s a great player. He let his presence be known,” he said after facing Crosby. “We know they got a dog on the D-line in Maxx Crosby. But I fear no man. The only thing I fear is God.”

Shedeur did win in the snow at Colorado — a sold out spring game where fans had to clear the field.

Hopefully he won’t be caught cold Sunday.
